EDIT:

Heh, good thing you mentioned that... I thought it was mini-USB, but turns out it's micro-USB and I'm pretty sure I don't have one of those cables. Ordered one off Monoprice along with some other back-up cables (better having extra than spending 5-10x as much at Best Buy for one).

Weird, I had a bunch of cell phone cables that worked (droid, blackberry, etc.)

All of my USB cables are normal or mini-USB . Although, I ordered a long one from Monoprice, so I can just leave the cable plugged in and re-tether with my laptop from my bed if I need to without it being too much of a hassle.

FYI - If you own a Kindle the charging cable that came with it is a Micro-USB B cable.

pretty soon it will almost be as good as the xbox1 for $25

or a beater htpc for $99

The point of this for me is to have something small, putting out very little heat, with the most intuitive interface possible for my wife and daughter to use.

The Xbox doesn't fit the bill, and neither does a "beater" htpc. I have a great htpc downstairs, I want something that can connect to it over the network and play movies, and possibly offer internet tv. A nettop like the acer aspire might work, but it's twice as much and that's before you add a remote.

All that being said, I took the Apple TV back. I don't want to buy a micro usb cable and go through hacking it just to have to wait until a patch that will let it play iso files.

How well does the Apple Remote actually work with XBMC? One of the biggest problems I have with XBMC on my PC is that media center remotes... they don't seem to work with it well. Keyboards on the other hand work fine. I can't ever seem to get something to emulate the "ESC" key, which would allow me to close any pop-up dialogs (that don't have a BACK option but do have a close button at the top right).

On my other HTPC, I ended up programming my ATI Remote Wonder to map one of the buttons to ESC to make life a bit easier.

Oh man, you guys have to update to the latest beta build found on the XBMC forums.
1000x improvement in navigation/menu speed.

If they can fix the 1080p stuttering (I'm okay with 720p output, as long as I don't have to re-encode) and add emulator support (with Xbox 360 wireless controllers using the Windows USB transmitter!) then I'm game  I'd love to ditch my modded Xbox1's and go smaller!

The problem is. One Player WILL never cover all the media and keep up. It's a dream to just have one box that will PLAY EVERYTHING you throw at it. It's not gonna happen. Who the hell has time to wait?

Right now there is NO best media box out there. Well, maybe a HTPC with VLC running on it. Even VLC doesn't play everything just 99% of it! For now I'm sticking with my popcorn box, it still plays a good portion of the stuff out there. I dunno, I'd love to upgrade to something that doesn't say "APPLE" on it. Probably HTPC is the way to go. Don't have any kids or wife so I could care less and I'm sure my dog doesn't care.

Huh?
XBMC uses MPlayer and FFMPEG.
MPlayer is just as capable as VLC.

Worth it if you're not a skinner? I think the stock UI looks fine, and don't play anything 720p. I'm kinda shocked how stable this is for a first go. Only thing I can't figure out how to do is set subtitles during playback

The fun isn't completely that it is XBMC on the new AppleTV. Part of the fun is that it works on iOS.

That means iPad 2, with its better specs, will be a perfect portable HD platform. If they put a mini displayport or HDMI adaptor on it then it will be a must have device....

I'm thinking more about Apple TV's next revision... well, if it has one. It may end up using the same hardware as the iPhone 5 similar to how the current one works now.

Yeah, I've had XBMC play some things VLC couldn't play and vice versa. As I said not ever solution will play it all, tho, the real deal killer is it's a hit or miss on 1080P.

So, again the PC still wins.

The only 1080p file I couldn't stream was a full bitrate, 40GB rip of a Blu-Ray.
Any other 1080p file I have thrown at it played fine.

(also you have to remember this thing is only $99 and XBMC is a beta release)

Look, I am not trying to say that it is going to be better than a computer running VLC but being 90% there and 1/5 the price, you can't go wrong.

how well does it support 1080p sequential 3D mode with DTS-MA pass-through (or linear pass-through)?

Is there a hulu plugin/addon that works with this version of xbmc yet?

If I use seas0npass to hack the ATV, do I have to use it to also perform the tethered boot? The problem I have is the ATV is supposed to go in another room... which is not where my Hackintosh is.

Hmm obvious solution is that I need to install OSX on my laptop .

There is a windows version of the tethered boot. You just have to copy the correct files found in your custom ipsw to your windows box. If you go to the xbmc forums there is a post about performing the tethered boot on windows.

My friend's a part-timer at a local Apple store and gets back into town on Wednesday...can't wait for him to pick me up an ATV2 so I can fool around with it.
