I use both depending on what my current needs are. But I do prefer using Macs in general.

n0cmonkey, I think they were refering to consumer friendly desktop OS's.

There are plenty of OSes available that are much more consumer friendly than anything put out by Microsoft.

but does the os's run windows games on them? not really... thats really the only reason to stick with windows today, is because they have all the games. everything else is done much nicer(faster/easier) on something 'not windows'(mac, linux)

Your thread title doesn't make sense. A Mac is a PC, as in Personal Computer.
Should be Apple vs. Wintel (WinAMD) or Apple vs. WIn-x86.

I *so* agree. I can't really stand how people don't consider Macs "PC's". They are personal computers too, are they not? The best description would probably be IBM-compatible vs. Macs.

Does windows run Linux binaries? How about tru64 binaries? No. duh.

Ok, now that we got the obvious out of the way, why do companies continue to develop only for Windows? Because that's all most people ask for. Why? Because there aren't games for other systems. Kind of running around in circles aren't we?

Have both. An iBook and my regular Win-AMD box. They both have their strengths and weaknesses.

The AMD machine is great for Video-editing and gaming since it has the appropriate muscle and is cheap to upgrade should the muscle not be enough.
The Mac is more idiot proof than Windows will ever be. I have to pry my iBook away from my mom every time I go to visit my parents - and she always said that she hates computers every time I tried to teach her Windows . The iBook is great value for money, doesn't have much muscle but it does have an excellent battery life, is small, reasonably light and has a very nice OS (good looking and intuitive GUI for mom and a very powerfull CLI for me).

IMO this is the best combination to have, Windows on the desktop and Macintosh on the road... can't beat it

i've really enjoyed playing around with them in the stores...and then walking over to the pc section to buy something affordable.

I prefer mac, everything just works for me. I work on a windows machine at work, so coming home doesnt make me feel like I'm at work again (though my work box is just a glorified xserver into an ancient sun box, but thats another story...).

I don't game much, but when I do, I have a playstation2 and metal gear solid.

Seriously, about the expense of owning a mac, its very price competitive these days. Its just that Apple can't afford to keep older stuff on the shelf, and if it did, I'm pretty sure it would sell for those low, low prices you can get some PCs for these days. But if you were considering an upper echelon chip from AMD or Intel these days, you could probably spring the extra 200 it takes to get a Mac.

I have a powerbook, and I'm pretty sure that with a faster harddrive all my needs would be satisfied.

Did I mention I never mess with drivers? not for a firewire dvd burner, not for a digital camera, not even for a printer...

jeeze people, if you are all going to become so damned technical then of course a mac is still a pc. realize this though, do not most people consider an IBM-compatible system a pc and a macinstosh pc just a macintosh or apple?

It is possible to use an XP emulator but why is the better question. Mac OS 10.3 (Panther) is a killer Operating System. I can use Microsoft office built specifically for the Mac which is much superior to the Office for XP due to the much better app integration. The games argument is true but this will change because the video cards are much better since Mac G5 use AGP and were the first to adopt PCI-x. Check out the new Nvida pci-x card which uses multiple DVI for the new 30 inch monitor Apple has coming out.

I consider a Mac a PPC based PC (or m68k if you go that far back), and IBM-compatible x86-based PC. I typically specify in posts too.

Most of the G4s used AGP also.

Mind rattleing off a few? Besides the offerings from Apple and MS I can't think of anything that is ready to go right out of the box and doesn't require any level of geekdom to operate.
