This watch.. all features. Gimmicks. No real benefits? What do I actually need it for? Apple was never about gimmicks. Why why why is it such an issue to reach in my pocket and look at my phone? I can see the point if it wasn't phone-dependent, the tether makes this a fail. Perhaps the point is to look at it only as a watch, with some gimmicks thrown in.

Phone in pocket is an issue, and a distraction at the gym. But i need it for music, running tracking and HR monitor sync. But why leave out the GPS? If Nike and Garmin can make GPS watches, why not apple? For a gym iPod, this is perhaps a decent option. It's light, might have some workout-tracking apps, and has HR monitoring which my nano has not. The digital crown might be better to use when sweaty, unlike my nano. The nike+ combo with the footpod is quite inaccurate though, and i was hoping they'd improve that.

Yeah but to be fair, what IS it supposed to do anyway? Other than maybe built-in GPS & 3G, what else is it supposed to do to make it interesting? That's the same issue I have with the new iPhone...yeah maybe they could have added a 2K screen or more megapixels, but other than that...I think waterproofing is about the only thing I wish they'd stuck in. I think both products are pretty well saturated at this point...

Didn't apple just demo like 20 different ways to use it on the 9th?

Apple got hammered for not offering a phone in the 4.7"-6" range and so they give people what they want. People then say "why would I want a big, high res screen? My 4" phone is fine!" Apple can't win, it could be a time machine for $399 and people would be like "why do I need a time machine? I like this era just fine!".

The Sport collection cases are made from lightweight anodized aluminum in silver and space grey. The display is protected by strengthened Ion-X glass. And the matching fluoroelastomer band comes in five different colours.

Well that sucks.

Sapphire glass is probably anyway wasted on these 1st gen smartwatches - it's not like anybody will be using one of these 5 years from now, so why bother?

The only reason I'd want one is for tracking exercise, but I'd be better served by a Jawbone UP24.

Sapphire is much, much more resistant to scratching.

(However, it also has other disadvantages, like increased brittleness.)

Well that sucks.

There is sapphire glass in 2 out of the three lines:

The Apple Watch collection features highly polished stainless steel and space black stainless steel cases. The display is protected by sapphire crystal. And there’s a choice of three different leather bands, a link bracelet, a Milanese loop, and a band made from high-performance fluoroelastomer.

The Sport collection cases are made from lightweight anodized aluminum in silver and space gray. The display is protected by strengthened Ion-X glass. And the matching fluoroelastomer band comes in five different colors.

The Edition collection features six uniquely elegant expressions of Apple Watch. Each has a watch case crafted from 18-karat gold that our metallurgists have developed to be up to twice as hard as standard gold. The display is protected by polished sapphire crystal. And an exquisitely designed band provides a striking complement.

I get that it's important in a good watch that you're going to keep for decades to come but I'm not seeing a massive upside to it in a device that is going to be replaced/obsolete in a year (particularly if it drives the cost up).

I didn't hear apple say anything about replacing your watch every year nor did I hear of any planned obsolescence.

After spending a good deal of time looking over all the smartwatches, both released and still on the way, I do think that hard angled square watches (LG G Watch) are just too ugly to even consider. At least Apple and Asus have soft round edges on their watches, that little visual difference is the line between ugly and okay. I still think the Moto 360 is far and away the best looking watch of the bunch. I think Apple is ahead on tech strictly because of NFC, that's something Android Wear needs to incorporate ASAP.

I expect big improvements for gen 2 smartwatches from all the big players. Those who aren't sure about them should definitely avoid the market until the second iterations come out.

It's a 1st gen model bit of consumer electronics, how long do you realistically expect it to stay relevant?

I don't see Apple watch being updated every year like the iPhone. Maybe every other year.

I would guess that it'll get to that but I wouldn't be surprised if it's more often to start with. Either way the sapphire glass isn't as vital as it is on a timepiece that you could keep for generations.

I feel like the Moto 360 is what the Steve Jobs would have done for his Apple Watch.

Only Steve would have figured out a way to not have that little black lip on one side of it, while keeping it perfectly round with a small bezel.

He might have not done it at all. He was not only proud of what Apple released, but also what they didn't release. Maybe Cook felt pressure to announce it now because of the perception of the lack of innovation.

Yeah, I can't imagine that they wouldn't upgrade this version of the watch within a year of its release. Early 2017 before they iterate on this one? I highly doubt that.

Cook pretty much said they announced it before release so that developers could get their hands on the development kit and start making apps ready for release.

Eh, I think he would have eventually...

The main thing about smartwatches which isn't really done is to make them repositories for music. With smartphones better bigger, and with their storage limited, imagine how cool it would be if you could carry part of your music library on the watch and listen to it while jogging.
