Two words: Backup Battery. If the power goes out (or I forget to plug the phone in, or the charger somehow gets unplugged, etc) that iPhone will likely be dead by the next morning.

My alarm clock's backup battery will go for days if needed.

If your phone is dieing while sitting idle all night, there's something wrong with it.

In x years' time, a review will read:

"By notifying me of digital events as soon as they happened, and letting me act on them instantly, without having to fumble for my watch,"

Perhaps you should take your own advice. Laptop sales have somewhat levelled out in last half-decade, but tablet sales increased dramatically in that same period (and now have stagnated).

IOW, while laptop sales were impacted by tablet sales, laptop sales remained a huge chunk of the market, but tablet sales represented a whole new complementary product category.

Yes some people only bought tablets but the market pattern is people buying tablets in addition to laptops.

To put it another way, I betcha everyone in this thread with a tablet also has a laptop. Furthermore, while their 5 year-old kids might have tablets now, those kids never had laptops in the past.

I didn't mean to be a butt to you. You said "I" in your response to disagree with an idea, which seemed self centered.

In my initial post I never said tablets displaced all laptops. I said it displaced them for "millions and millions of consumers." Again, the watch does not displace anything for anyone except a few dudes that wear Casio calculator watches (jking.)

What does the Apple Watch displace? Nothing. It extends the functionality of the iPhone, but it doesn't replace it. A hard sell for most consumers.

Good point. Either it has to displace an item I already have, or carve out new territory for itself. If it could do something completely different, then sure...

I'm not in the habit of buying the very first version of gadgets to hit the market. I can't update my first eReader anymore, because it's considered so archaic.

This is exactly what makes the Watch an unattractive and unnecessary product category for me.

The iPhone displaced:

Cell Phones
Digital Cameras
Digital Camcorders
e-Readers
Watches
Blackberrys
GPS Navigation Units
Palm Pilots
iPods and all portable music players
Portable Video Players
Alarm Clocks
Voice Recorders
Scanners

In my view, the Watch helps the iPhone displace those devices more effectively, and adds new capabilities.

Lol.

I have an iphone and an XPERIA Z ULTRA -- it is much better!
I use DSLR for all serious photography

etc etc

but the iphone is a neat gadget not a godly device.

The problem I see with this product is it doesn't displace any previous product. The iPad was a phenomenon because it displaced laptops and desktops for millions and millions of consumers. It did everything most people do on computers and put it into book form. Incredibly successful. The iPhone displaced all cell phones and the iPod displaced every form of portable music player.

It might displace fitness trackers. I currently have a Fitbit HR if I got an Apple Watch it would replace it.

The Fitbit does have the advantage of 5 days of battery life and when I first read about the Apple Watch I thought one day of battery life would be a show stopper. However, I think it might be okay, the reason why is that I find wearing my Fitbit while sleeping is uncomfortable and I take it off and charge it.

I tried a fitbit when it first came out due to curiosity, but ended up not using it that much. I am an active individual and didn't see how it helped me. I know a lot of people liked them initially, but I saw it more as a fad that would die off or become integrated as a bullet point feature in future products, especially for those that don't use them as actual training tools like marathon runners.

I think the Apple Watch could be something big a long time from now. I think it needs to be more worry-free such as kinetically/solar charged, integrated into many facets of life, and ubiquitous commercial support. The day when my car is programmed into my wearable and walking up to it unlocks the doors, sitting in it starts the engine, approaching my house while in the car opens the garage door and unlocks the front door, etc then it will be a nice item to have.

I think it can get there, but right now its a tough sell. It is a mega investment by Apple to try to get to that point and hope everyone jumps on board. However, its not only a big investment from Apple its also a huge investment from the consumer and third parties. It still unsure automation is worth it to the mainstream consumer on such a scale where it does truly become ubiquitous.

In the end, the wearable could displace phones.

I feel it's unusual for Apple to make something that does so much so poorly.

Usually it's doing less but really really well.

What does the watch do really well?

It tells time pretty well.

No it doesn't. You can't just glance at it, you have to lift/rotate your arm enough to wake the display which doesn't work as well as it needs to acc. to the verge review.

Do you really think it's better at time than a normal watch? Maybe when you travel but really... iPhone.

I think Apple realized it needed to get in the sector and start working on it, many of the criticisms will be ironed out in gen 2, and the apps need to mature. Even with it's limitations, I think gen 1 will sell like crazy, and seed the market for the next generation.

iWatchReturns.com

Anyone get the address yet? Because this is going to be hilarious when people realize what a waste of money it is.

I'm sort of surprised by the relative lack of forum chatter about this. Not a single post about receiving or initial impressions. And did I read things right that there is only *ONE* store in the US you can buy one at?

WTF kind of launch is that? 8 months and that's the best you can do?

Online only launch. Cheaper for Apple I'm sure.

I think there is relatively little chatter about this here, simply because for more techy people, smart watches simply don't offer anything compelling. For some normal plebe, it is probably some revelation to be able to get an alert on their watch. For us, we had a Casio Calculator watch in grade school; Apple Watch ain't got nothing on that!

It's just so.....un-Apple. iPhones and iPads were almost always available by the pallet load at retail locations the day of launch. They had 8 months to bring this thing to market after announcement and the best they can do is a couple hour middle of the night web purchase?

It has been a very bizarre product announcement and release so far.

Well, the watch looks like something my son wore when he was 10 and was purchased at legoland in florida. Its very kiddy looking. No self respecting man or woman would proudly sport it in public let alone post on a geek forum.

The colored sport ones are kinda tacky, I will confess that in user submitted pictures the space grey with black bands looks sharp.

It's Probably because no-one got one yet. The macrumors dwellers are full of people flipping the fuck out because they didn't get the watch they ordered at 12:03 AM Pac time.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, but the iPhone 5s release was so bad I ended up not getting one at all, then when I got the 6+ I waited weeks for my phone because I had the temerity to not stay up until 3AM EST to oder it, and waited until 7AM.

Apple products are becoming harder to get on launch day across the board. the MacBooks are the same way IIRC.

I ordered the sport version because $400 is more than enough already, I may change it to the black/black, I currently have the silver/white on order and I'm not so sure about wearing that into work. OTOH, black is such a crappy color...

Im amazed at apples audacity to charge 50 bucks more for the larger watch. Surely aluminium doesnt cost that much more nor does steel. WTF apple?

Also, it seems Apple is tacitly allowing 3rd party bands, so I'll probably just get one of those. The magnetic leather ones seem cool, but they're $149

Yeah, I think that's crappy too. It's what I ordered though, I think 42mm is already a little too small.
