Apples MBP screen coating - just awful

Holy shit, Apples AR coating is bad! It also picks up finger grease like crazy, so I just used water on a microfibre cloth, very gently because I've heard stories of exactly this, and fracking this happens. I think they just changed their policy to cover this, but the hassle is still a drag even if they do. And even if they fix it, no guarantee it won't happen again, unless I go forever without cleaning the stains off the screen.

This is not what two and a half grand should look like.

A few thousand people here have it too

What am I looking at, exactly - trapped water?

Anyway, I though they didn't offer an AR coating anymore - just all shiny, all the time.

You're looking at the screen coating being etched away, I guess with a combination of the screen hitting the palm rest while closed, and just plain water being wiped gently on it.

They don't offer a matte screen, but they put an AR coating on their reflective screens. Different things.

Why would the screen be hitting the palm rest? These laptops are designed to have a space between the screen and the armrest hence the rubber edge around the laptop screen.

I see hundreds of mac laptops in use every month and nobody has a scratched screen like that unless they shove it into a bag with heavy books that weigh down on it.

How long did you have this laptop? I'm pretty anal about not touching the screen but I've read that this is a publicized issue which Apple will supposedly quietly address if you take it in for service.

This...I believe if you take this in they will replace for free. They had a bad coating on some of the rMBP.

this is a well documented issue
http://www.staingate.org/

you could actually see this on floor display models from time to time, was comical

Huh. Foxconn must have had some bad batches of coating.

I've had UV coating peel off my glasses like that.

I guess I'll try washing my display and see if I can get it to do that. It's almost 2 years old now.

ahh yes, I love the "this didn't happen to me, OP must be lying" response

its a known issue, that apple is aware of and fixes for free. hes not making this up and its not user error
there was a bad coating run or a poor coating choses at one point, it was reported on in the media when it happened, it was not massively widespread. most likely just a batch or 2. we tested some, was IIRC a bonding issue. its not apple alone, it has happened to other OEMs as well

Most certainly.

Bingo. OP is in denial about his own fuck-ups.

I've had a MBP 13" since 2 and 1/2 years back, never even came close to what the hell this is.

Jesus guys, just because you havn't seen this don't try to pin all the blame on the user, these are both pretty common. With 5 seconds of research -

*not finger grease, that's the AR coating getting ebbed away by the keycaps

http://www.macrumors.com/2015/10/17/apple-mbp-ar-coating-quality-program-staingate/

http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/1...t-anti-reflective-coating-on-macbook-screens/

Have you seen how close the screen sits to the keyboard and wrist rest? That rubber band around the screen is what, a millimeter thick? A little pressure, just enough to hold it up, and it regularly makes contact.

If a laptop can't be held under it's own weight without the screen touching the keyboard - that's not a user error, that's the laptop not doing what a laptop should. Apple didn't make a repair program for this just because of a few dozen users.

I also see a few MBAs with keycaps etched on-screen at work, that's in a small sample size. If your anecdotes are worth squat so is that.

If your MBPs have been fine, maybe the coating on mine and many other users was thinner or misapplied, still not user error. Some of you guys are getting uppity and defensive over common use.

Thank you. Some of the other responses are a little ridiculous and dismissive. I've never seen an elephant so none exist. Good new info too - so the replacement should be safer, if this was a bad batch?

Looks more like greasy potato chip all night binges and you picking up the laptop by the screen with your greasy paws. Salt and trans fat grease will do this.

tipoo: When did you buy yours? As I recall this was reported as being an issue on a certain batch(es). My current model 15" has been fine (Bought in June), along with many we have here at work. But would be cool to see if the models with the issue all come from the same time period.

Its a crock. My mid 2009 MBP has been through hell and still, the screen looks great. These peopl bitching on the net are in it to raise hell for user error. Most likely sprayed cleaner directly on screen or some other stupid junk like that. Reminds me of that whiner on XDA crying and petitioning on youtube and XDA about how his new LGV10 in a massive case, fell 2 feet onto soft carpet and shattered his screen in a million pieces.

11/21/14, from Futureshop in Canada. Bit older than yours since you bought this year, so hopefully the replacement has no issues.

Or read the damn thread. This is an issue affecting thousands - you're saying they all used screen cleaner against the instructions? You can believe me that I didn't or you can't, I don't really care. i've never had an RRoD therefore every RRoD is user error, is about as clever as your point is. Not every failure affects every user, it doesn't get more basic than that.

Retina didn't even ship till 2013, again, if you read the damn thread. 2009 models are neither here nor there. Really, you "peopl".

My first-gen rMBP was bought in 2012, so I'm pretty sure that's not correct..

2012 then, which doesn't change my point, 2009 was pre-retina so I'm unsure of the point of dragging that into this. The new coatings are what failed on thousands of people. Introduced with Retina.

And I'm assuming yours is fine, so I'll repeat that of course not every issue affects everyone, like, say, the RRoD. Some people still have launch units going, doesn't disprove that it was a widespread issue.
