There are so many choices in the grocery store for apples these days, which variety is the best?

I've had the following lately

Fuji - i thought these where fine, nothing great though
Golden Delicious - not delicious
Honeycrisp - favorite so far, crispy and lots of juice

Half of red delicious' name is a lie. If I were rich, I'd buy every red delicious tree in the country just for the pleasure of cutting them down for firewood.

Best apples...

Stayman - Only locally available in fall, but is the king of apples.
Macintosh - Solid apple with solid availability, and isn't proprietary. Cheap
Honeycrisp - Proprietary apple, but pretty damned tasty. One of the best available if price isn't factored in.
Pink Lady - About 90% as good as honeycrisp, but cheaper, and not proprietary.
Autumn Gold(?) - Aldi had these a couple years ago. Not sure of the name, but they were super tasty, with spice and caramel notes. Also hinted at pear flavor. Expensive.

The best thing about hard cider is if you're some place that has that, they probably have good stuff like whisky and beer too :^D

I'm not anti cider, but it's not my favorite.

I like my apples with a bit of tartness to them. But then again I eat raw cranberries as a snack.

I love a good McIntosh. But they're a little delicate and don't store well, so they're not available year round like some others. Seems like I have more and more trouble finding them in stores every year. Just found them last night when grocery shopping, in fact. Which is crazy - it's December.

Honeycrisps are fantastic, but they aren't consistent. They've overplanted them and they pick them too early. The ones coming from Washington state, especially, are crap. They should be red, not yellow. I can't even find good ones any more in the stores in Colorado.

SweeTangos are very good. They're a Honeycrisp derivative, so share some of the same crisp texture, but they have a different, more tangy flavor.

The problem with most big grocery stores is that they seldom carry more than six to eight varieties, even if you find some that are available for short periods in the fall.

True. 5+ years ago Honeycrisps were a lot better. This is also why Envys aren't that great, they are even more inconsistent, especially in texture.
