doesn't even have to come from china. Most products have a built in 'life' by design and have for decades. they don't want you to have it forever, they want you to buy another one.

Yep it's gotten ridiculous really. I wonder at what point we'll see class action lawsuits over planned obsolescence. That would be something pretty huge because pretty much every company does it now.

It should be made illegal. It's basically purposely forcing people to pay even more money when they did not have to, it's almost like stealing in a way. If anything, environmental laws should be put in place to stop it as it is also generating more pollution for nothing. Governments go on about trying to cut down carbon, but then allow idiotic stuff like designing products to purposely fail. Then there's companies like Apple that use IP laws to make it illegal to fix it.

Back in the good old days you paid more for stuff, but it came with full schematic, was serviceable, and lasted a good chunk of your life time. Now everything is cheap and disposable, but it ends up costing you more in the long run not to mention contributing to pollution.

Pc boards, and plastic are what happened to appliances. Things that make it easy for a robot to assemble decrease lifespan.

I have no idea what I'd buy today if a major appliance went up. I like my stuff stupid. I guess they still make it like that, right? Sure it's a "major" hassle to twiddle the knob on a fridge, but once you get it set, it good til it dies. I don't need to micromanage my appliances. More choice=more work.

You have no idea... I went to look for one, simple, dumb toaster oven last year: no non-stick, no electronics, just stainless steel. One model turned up. I've been looking for retarded 32" TVs and a lot of them are "Smart" now. My choice of retarded cell phones is limited to like one or two models.

We can only blame ourselves. We don't want to pay for expensive products so they have to make them outside the county. If we want it made in our country, be prepared to pay 2-3x as much for the same product. Fitting for the times we are in

I'll field this one fellas.

It's a crime because it places 'profit' above 'quality'.

I have a pair of scissors made in the USA from 1950.They will cut anything. From steel banding on pallets , to paper.
I could chop wood , and stab 1000 zombies to death with em.
I'm pretty sure no-one in north America makes anything like this now.
It's a shame really.

I've even had AXES break while being used on wood. AXES. Seriously. It's gotten really bad. To be fair, it was the handle part when I missed a log, but still.

lol so is this actually really a common thing now for appliances? I had heard of it but did not realize it was that mainstream. So it's basically a giant tablet? I wonder what kind of spy tech they put in that... Who needs stuff like Cottonmouth when you can just built it into devices and have people buy it in droves!

My stove is 20 years old and my fridge is about 30. I'd replace them but don't trust anything new to last as long. I'm not going to replace a major appliance every 5 years.

Yeah, Keep it simple for value and reliability. (I too buy no frills mainboards, simple toaster ovens and have a very dumb phone, the BB Torch, would you believe? Talk and text mostly.)

Though not always and one must be alive to exceptions. E.g., looking for a new clothes washing machine ? Well in Can. you can ignore the common Samsungs, the LGs, GE and other advertized models which are subject to massive recalls and constant warranty calls , and go high end. My wife found the Heubsch. This item is known as a commercial brand but is available retail if you look for it--no recalls that I am aware of, no IOT frills and way more reliable. Yet it's 2/3 more expensive.

Sometimes you just gotta cough-up for quality

I eventually want to look at a front loader as I'd be able to actually do my blankets at home. Top loaders don't really have enough room for that, you can stuff it in there but it won't have enough free movement. So I end up going to the laundromat. Downside is the front loaders are the ones with a billion electronics and stuff and are the ones that always have issues. It's crossed my mind to actually go with a laundromat grade one if ever I upgrade. Totally overkill, but it will probably last my whole life time.

One issue too is the electronic/software part of devices tends to be rushed and skimped on the most. This is clear with the IoT phenomenon and the fact that they end up as part of bot nets. What's scary is they are doing this kind of crap with cars too.

When we had to replace our washer and dryer, we went with Speed Queen. Made in the US, mechanical controls (not electronic) that will be repairable for many years if needed. Not the cheapest, but not the most expensive either. Expect they will be working for many, many years and if there's an occasional repair needed, it won't be because some $300 circuit board popped a capacitor.

Actually, what is up with Chinese tool steel? It's more like an enameled ceramic. I've broken hand tools by accident and seen failure modes that I did not even know were possible with metal. It actually shatters. I'm not really a strong person, so if I mange to break a hand tool while simply using it, I know it's because it's made super cheap.

I have a front loading Maytag that I got ten years ago and has had zero issues. Same age Maytag dryer just had a wheel start squeaking but it was like a $20 part and took no time to replace.

I use a Welbilt oven that came with my co-op. It was made in 1948. The oven uses kitchen matches to light. I love it. It will last until 3048. It will never "go" as there is nothing in it to "go". The stove covers a a tad worn through but other than that its in pretty top-top shape.
