I often find myself frustrated with recipes because the majority of them call for ingredients that I don't have or don't want to buy *just* for this one recipe. This problem is exacerbated when you're just cooking for one and there is a required ingredient that can only be bought in bulk and is perishable. Or it's a special ingredient that I don't know how to use in something else.

Also, while traveling, sometimes you only have access to limited cooking instruments. In China or Hong Kong I didn't have an oven or things like blenders or steamers. When on the road, I have a little pressure cooker and a camping stove but that's IT.

I'm looking for an app that can generate or filter a database of recipes based on these fundamental inputs.

- available ingredients currently on hand (with a set number of ingredients that the user is ok with going out and buying)

- available cooking instruments on hand

- maybe time

- desired taste profile

Anything like this out there?

http://www.supercook.com/ has on-hand ingredients but not cooking instruments or time

Every single other recipe website just lists categories. For me, clicking on a category for "BEEF" is about as retarded as it gets since it brings up recipes that 95% of the time I can't do.

Currently there is one thing out there like that...the human brain.

Many in here can't stand cooking comps like Cutthroat Kitchen or Chopped. However, they teach you how to improvise, and improvisation is huge in the cooking process. Improv can lead to innovation. I hope an app never exists that replaces human innovation. When it does we are all doomed.

Ok, I changed the OP to place less emphasis on "intelligently generate" and more emphasis on just filtering a database of available recipes by ingredients on hand, cookware/appliances, and time.

Here's two recipes:

Recipe 1
Get piece of meat.
Heat it up.
Eat it.

Recipe 2
Get a green vegetable.
Heat it up.
Eat it.

Adjust recipe to taste, according to supplies on hand.

Did you even try it? I dont think there is a taste profile masterlist.
Cookware? A knife and a pot is all you need.

I was wondering why you were so concerned about the appliances needed to cook things, but then I remembered that you used to live out of the trunk of your car for awhile.

Are you still doing that?

Forgot to mention, Yummly has an app that is pretty decent. They have lots of filters:

They don't have every appliance out there, but they do have a techniques section that includes baking, microwaving, etc.

I cook a ton out of appliances myself, primarily for convenience. It's awesome!

+100 for Instant pot. Life changer. Still debating the sous vide...... :hmm:

For the price of an Instant Pot, an Anova is not worth getting unless you're really into experimenting with recipes & want to use sous vide. It does make very tender meats (I haven't tried veggies or fruits yet, but apples are next on my list) but after cooking steak straight-up in my new Namath Rapid Cooker, I think I prefer that method better for steaks at least. I would sooner get the Kitchenaid Multi-cooker with the Stir Tower because automatic stirring would be an amazing addition to my kitchen arsenal. But at $400 just to add auto-stir, eek!

I use pretty much all of my appliances on a monthly basis though (rotating through recipes), and a select few on a regular basis. Bread machine for RideFree's 13-cent loaf, rice cooker is on almost daily in warming mode, Instant Pot for meat, veggies, and brown rice, etc. We use the Blendtec almost daily too, that thing has definitely earned its asking price! It's also nice because I constantly have friends or family over & it's awesome to toss stuff in on automatic & have food ready so we can chill & chat or watch a movie or play games or whatever, but still get good food without having to get take-out.

One of these days, I need to write a guide for the Instant Pot. Like you said, it's a life-changing device. People have no idea...

Yet another completely unique thread topic from FBB, which is funny because there are generally 2 types of threads by him/her: these, or something regarding Japan (or China)

I'm pretty sure that the OP is male, judging from the past posts in the L&R forum.
