Maybe their downfall is because of the NAMBLA customers they lost since Jared was ousted.

It seems like Subway is in every strip mall I pass and that's a lot of strip malls. They grew too fast with a mediocre product. They just now added wraps - too little, too late.

Publix deli is also a competitor in the South. They have good subs along with hot and cold deli items.

Nothing beats a good old po-boy from New Orleans. I want a roast beef po-boy dressed with lots of gravy. Or maybe I'll have fried oyster. Mmmm, I'm hungry now.

Bradley Food and Beverage, smoked turkey on pumpernickel or a soft roll, LTM a dab of mustard and some provolone.

Gracias, amigo!

And 50 years for that? Ok, that's a fuckton of food alright, but not 50 years worth of freedom stripped of you because of it. Our justice system is seriously flawed when it comes to sentencing. Seriously flawed.

Texas, and it was explicitly stated "an example must be set"

Yes, between wawa and Publix my sub needs are met. I no longer get that "Subway smell" on my clothes. It's not a terrible smell exactly, but there is a distinct Subway aroma that can't be mistaken for anything else.

Your comment about the South and Publix reminded me of decades ago when my girlfriend from TN came down to FL with me. Up there they only had Food Lion/Krogers etc, no Publix. She saw the sign and asked: "Pewblix???" (ie, like she was saying pubic)...still cracks me up to this day

Never understood why anybody thought what Subway sold was actually an authentic east coast sub. First, it was Jimi Johns showing Subway what a Sub is supposed to be, now my addiction and favorite is Jesey Mikes.

#13 mike's way, add mayo if you want something a little more classic-sub like.
My normal go to is the #5, Mikes way with mayo. I love cappacola. Sometimes I throw them for a loop and order a custom turkey and cappacola. When I worked at the EB shipyard in Groton there were several "Grinder" shops (people don't realize that the name sub came from there). There was a place that used to make that sub.

I stopped going to Subway when they stopped the perpetual $5 Footlong deal. Pricing was way too high considering the quality.

Jimmy John's, Jersey Mike's, Firehouse Subs...hell, even Quizno's is better.

Yea Subway never upped their quality, that's their problem. They obviously operate on razor thin margins with how low they price those $5 subs. Subway is going to have to go more upmarket to survive with higher quality products.

How many companies are successful at that?

They've pretty much established their brand as a fast, cheap sandwich shop.

They made a mark at the time as a healthier alternative to McDonald's, ie cheap fast food. The higher quality, higher price shops like Quiznos couldn't compete.

That's their clear value proposition. Less gross than McDs for the money. Plus they cemented the $5 footlong pretty tightly.

If they start trying to move upscale, I think they will have a hard time navigating that without just making their image expensive, low quality FF.

Case in point, if McD tried to upscale to compete with Five Guys, would you think "wow, McD burgers are awesome now" or "WTF is this big Mac eight bucks?!"

I wish they would stop screwing with their lineup. Cheesburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger.

Ok got a large - pretty big sandwich, didn't realize and all the toppings were fresh and the tomatoes were large a red. A little pricey but well worth it.

Yeah a large is too much for me, I just add chips to my regular when I'm really hungry.

Pretty tasty but I do still prefer the 13, mostly because of what the pepperoni adds. They made this one extra slutty, which was nice.

Rotten Groten, that is where i had the first sub sandwich ever. Back when I was on my first boat. Grinders and beer were a staple food in the barracks.

I remember when a Subway opened where I went to college in the 80's. I had never heard of it before then. I think it was a small chain at the time. What's weird is that it's exactly the same as it was back then. Including that crappy bread which they think people will like just because they bake it there in an oven behind the counter. 40 years and they couldn't manage to improve the most often criticized aspect of their product. I think their decline is corporate Darwinism in action.
