Subway's mystery meat is pretty gross looking and the wonderbread seems fake. Cheapest cheese-like product ever.

I'm fortunate to have some awesome Italian delis around who bake their own bread, use boars head lunchmeat OR even roast their own. Plus it's nice it's a local shop with local owners and not some big franchise.

Home roast pork, extra sharp provolone, hot italian peppers and broccoli rabe on homemade bread is amazing.

Goddammit, I'm literally drooling now...

Yeah, after I posted above I ordered from a local sub shop that has to be putting some addictive chemical in their food. So good.

I swear, I'm never eating at Subway again.

Subways is possibly the worst place to get a sub. Being in nyc I have many options. The local shop by work sells a sub called the dagwood and has ham turkey Swiss roast beef lettuce tomatoes peppers and dressing and is literally five times the meat for about a buck more. Screw subways.

Yea Subway never upped their quality, that's their problem. They obviously operate on razor thin margins with how low they price those $5 subs. Subway is going to have to go more upmarket to survive with higher quality products.

They are literally the worst sandwich shop I have ever eaten at. I don’t think they have just not upped their quality, I think their quality has actively declined.

I haven’t eaten at one in at least two years and if I never eat there again that would be fine. Terrible, terrible food.

Subway is meh. If I want a sub wawa is way better (beaten by a gas station!) along with any number of other competitors..these days I'm trying to stick to salads in any case!

For the price Wawa is the greatest sandwich of them all.

Jimmy John's
Firehouse
Jersey Mike's
Quiznos
Blimpie's...
Had Firehouse in Arizona or somewhere... can't remember but it was pretty good.

Jersey Mike's.. great. Probably my fave.

Quiznos... used to love 'em but as with others haven't seen one in years.

Blimpie's is hit and miss when I've had it.

Here in So Cali a couple local faves (no idea if they're out of state too)

Togo's (probably my least fave but still pretty good)

Which wich- currently my absolute favorite. Different from all the others; varied selection, tons of individualized choices. Their innovation of the customer checking off their ingredient selection on the bag the sandwich will end up in is brilliant. They deserve to rise as Subway falls.

Subway has run its course. It's just boring and I'm not surprised in the least they are faultering some. When I'm out and looking for a quick bite, seeing a Subway is like "oh no. What a let down." I'd rather drive miles to something else than take a chance on subway.

The better sandwich places do things like slice the deli meats right in front of you... and religiously refresh their veggies bar.

Subway: its just whatever's in the little plastic bins. Down to 3 sad tomato slices floating in water in the bottom bin... and some frumpy lettuce ? That's what they'll plop on your sandwich instead of bring out the fresh. No thanks.

They need a total overhaul after they slash enough locations, and focus on the remaining. Thousands of locations don't mean crap when the one you're in sucks.

Subway is disgusting. Check this piece CBC did where they tested chicken from a bunch of different fast food franchises (McDonalds, Wendys, Subway, Tim Horton's, and A&W) and they all came back almost 100% chicken other than Subway, which were around 50% chicken.

I used to love subway but they changed something in the food,. if i eat their crap food now, about 2 hours later i will be shitting until I am transparent. It has to be some preservative, i can make my own subs from the grocery store deli and have no bowel issues.

I think it's the bread or something they add to it. I tell people if they want a colon cleanse - eat a subway sub......

I don't feel sorry in the least for Subway as a corporation to have to close 500 stores. Its obvious they'd rather brag about x,000 locations than make a good damn sandwhich in any one of them.

They have resources enough to reinvent themselves and do it right. If not? Good riddance. Other companies doing a better job will happily take up those locations.

Trouble with Panera, it takes 20+ minutes until your order is ready.
The wait time is painfully painful. And ridiculous.

I've only been once and it wasn't very good. The company was originally called St. Louis Bread Company (it still is here in the STL Metro) and locals get mad when people call it Panera.

Their 8 inch subs are 7 inches and their tomatoes are like and inch in diameter with green centers. Never again.

Maybe my favorite subway fact is that their ‘footlong’ sandwiches aren’t a foot long. When sued about this their argument was that it was just a name and was not intended to be an indicator of length. Lol.

As already mentioned, there are a ton of better chains out there. And lots of local places too. Their food is not a good value. The one thing they have going for them is the selection of fresh veggies although a lot of times the quality of those is sub-par. List of national/regional sub shops within about 2 miles of where I work other than subway:

Lenny's
Dibellas
Firehouse
Jimmy Johns
Jersey Mikes
Penn Station
Pot belly

And there are at least that many good local places. I haven't eaten at subway in years and I don't really have a reason to.

I can't say I'm surprised because local sandwich shops I am familiar with are far superior.

Subway is pretty crappy. Jersey Mikes are popping up everywhere and their subs are light years better than Subway. There's no comparison. The only time I eat Subway is when I want a cheap mediocore meatball sub, and it's located like 1/4 mile from my house so it's convenient. Their cookies are damn good though.
