If you want a Mosin Nagant that sounds like a canon, try one of these M44's:

They have a much shorter barrel and a permanently installed, folding bayonet like the one on the M91/30 (only shorter). They were once a dime a dozen, but now the supply has about dried up and they're difficult to find in gun stores.

These sound like a cannon going off and kick like a mule. The fireball is awe-inspiring.

After hemming and hawing for a week, I'm in for one. Guy I work with is a dealer and has an FFL so he's doing the transfer for me for $20 bucks.

Went with this lower parts kit from AIM for the build:
http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=XRGLPK&groupid=143

$58 and it's stainless steel so it will add some contrast to the trigger assembly.

I'm going to go with a fully assembled upper from PK firearms. They've got an AWB compliant 16" Bushmaster upper that looks pretty nice for $515. Chrome lined chamber and bore with the flat top. I was on the fence for either that or a Rock River Arms with a stainless 20" barrel chambered in .223 Wylde. In the end the extra $130 bucks for the RRA upper and the fact that I don't want a long rifle pushed me to the Bushmaster.

Still up in the air on which stock to use. I can't get an adjustable stock being in NY and the options for fixed stocks are limited. I'm thinking maybe an RRA Operator A2. There are standard M4 stocks that are setup as non-adjustable but they just don't look that comfortable to shoot with. The RRA Operator will run me $125.

So altogether it should cost me about $758 plus shipping. Still need to pick up mags, ammo and either a rear sight or scope after that. Probably close to $900 when all is said and done.

I'm interested to put one together and see how they work so this is cool for me. Also lets me spread out the cost.

The lowers were back ordered for a while but mine finally shipped and I got it Tuesday this week. I bought the RRA lower parts kit and put it all together that night. I didn't realize I need to lubricate it so I ordered a bottle of CLP with the butt stock this week.

I have no prior experience with other lowers but this one looks pretty good. I don't see any defects in it and the parts kit assembled into it the way it was supposed to. Everything is nice and snug and well seated.

Overall I'd say its a pretty hot deal. Now I've gotta order an upper, a scope and some mags and I'll be ready to take it to a range.

Well I finally got all my parts and assembled my rifle. Cost me about $925 for everything you see in the picture. Picked up a few other incidentals like a cleaning kit, CLP, shooting glasses, ear plugs and a trigger lock which brought the total up to about a grand.

Anyway here's the finished product:

Scope is a Walther PS-22. Pretty nice red dot for cheap, $80. Next I gotta pick up some ammo and take it to the range.

What kind of buttstock is that? I don't recognize it. Also, you need some 30 round PMags stat! That thing sticking out the bottom of your mag well is an Obamanation.

Stock is a Rock River Arms operator stock. Its pretty nice. Bolted up nice and snug with no wobble. Has a storage compartment in it for red dot batteries too. I live in NY so I'm stuck with the assault weapons ban laws here. That means no adjustable stock, no flash suppressor and no mags larger than 10 rounds.

I could pick up larger mags actually but they have to be pre-ban. The thing that worries me about that is none of them are ever stamped with a mfg date. They all have codes and supposedly the codes can be referenced back to the mfg date but that means I have to trust whoever is selling me them. For now I'm gonna stick with the three 10 rounders I bought. They do look stupid though.

I would invest in a good flip-up BUIS (back up iron sight) and have it mounted and sighted in along with the red dot. If the red dot dies at the wrong time you will want the iron sights. Otherwise, nice build! Sucks to be in NY, though.

There are "10/30" mags that are the size of 30-rounders but actually only hold 10. So you can use mag pouches and other accessories for 30-rounders (and your gun can look like it's supposed to) but still meet your state's laws. E.g. PMags here:

I do like that buttstock, I had never seen one before.

Actually the short magazine along with that stock make the weapon look a lot sleeker than what you'd normally see with an AR-15.

Also it's a nice symmetry - soldiers get 10 trigger pulls per magazine with their M-16's and so do you. (of course they are firing 3 round bursts...)
