So sick of having to put my damn birthday into every game site I go to. I mean, seriously!?!?!?!? It's Gauntlet.

Oh yeah, I forgot. Valkyrie needs dick, badly!

Finally remembered to watch the video last nite, pretty cool. Looks like it could make for some fun drop and join 4 plyer coop matches.

Played an hour or so and thought 'meh'
Same here. Was initially looking forward to it, but the controls annoyed me right from the start. No rebindable keys (and you can't use cursor keys - WASD only, "Shift" also means "Left Shift only", etc). Wizard's "combo's" just felt out of place for Gauntlet (which is about simplicity). Gameplay is highly monotonous (and yet I loved original Gauntlet on the ZX Spectrum). I couldn't get into it either. Uninstalled already. :|

Edit : (Also amazes me how such simple modern games end up taking up enormous amounts of HDD space relative to GFX & gamplay with little to justify it (Gauntlet is 2.4GB installed. In comparison, Torchlight was only 435MB...) :hmm:

I think it's tailored for gamepads. Also I believe it really emphasizes co-op. At least I recall reading that co-op is kinda the point of the game (so if you played single player I'd expect it might be pretty disappointing), and that it's sorta a competition.

Wizard's combos are there because it's made by the developer that did Magicka.

I'm not saying your opinion isn't valid or that it couldn't still be a bad game, but you need to play it multiplayer and you need to keep in mind that it's a competition as much as it is co-op.

I haven't gotten to play it yet, and probably will hold off as I won't be able to play it multiplayer much right now. It sounds fairly shallow and so if you can't find at least a couple of friends to play it with like a sorta hack 'n slash Smash Bros (simple competitive game) it probably won't be worth it to you.

My question is: Is it a modern remake of Gauntlet?

As in is the gameplay mostly identical to the original Gauntlet, just with modern graphics and whatnot? Or did they much with everything and change how the gameplay feels?

Yes or no? That's all I want in terms of an answer based on those criteria toward the original question.

If Yes, I can understand why people would say "meh", because they're expecting more out of a current game. And a lost of nostalgic gamers tend to go back to old games or old style games and go, "Wait, I used to like this?" Still, it'd be an instant buy for a purist.

If No, I can understand why people would say "meh", because they're expecting the purist game out of the remake. It would mean throwing money at an unknown.

Main complaint I heard so far was that is was too much like the original.

I'd say people like that can DIAF. So many games I'd love to rebuy if all they did was republish with modern graphics/modern computer specs.

If you read the RPS review it seems the answer to your question is a resounding "No". What really surprised me is that the maps are not mazes like in the original game which sort of dictated how you tried to clear things out.

Bought this yesterday with some friends on the Steam mid-week madness sale for it. Got into a few games and it feels pretty much like the original. There is some change up of gameplay with giving the characters a "progression" RPG like feel with being able to buy better equipment. My complaints, and those of my friends, are as follows:

1) Mouse and keyboard play is wonky. Your character attacks in the direction the mouse is currently located at on the screen. The problem is that as your team mates run around the screen, the screen position can change even if you don't move the mouse. Which can make targeting a bit of a pain with the mouse.

2) Hard to see you character. In the original game the characters were a bright color and everything else was mostly white, gray, or black. This made picking out the characters easier. In this game with all the fancy graphics and small character, the little strips of color make it harder to figure out your character sometimes in a tough fight. Especially if you noticed you need some food, spot some off to the edge of the screen, and then try to look back and figure out where on the screen you are in order to figure out how to get your character to that food.

3) Balance. The characters are far from equal and the game was designed to be really used in co-op. The elf is very easy to play from the get go and can solo the game from the start without any upgrades to equipment. This is because of the elf's damage output, huge AoE bomb, massive mobility, and being able to do everything from range. The other three characters are not able to do that at all. The Warrior is ridiculously hard to play early on because the warrior is very squishy like all the other classes, but has to always be in the middle of the monsters to do anything. The warrior gets more powerful and much tankier with upgrades, but that takes a lot of dedication to get to that point. The Wizard is fun to use, but needs a meat shield or at least someone else to play a diversion to get his abilities out as most are on long cooldowns. The wizard basically lobs a nuke and waits 3 seconds to lob another. During which the wizard is running around trying not to be killed in 2 hits while waiting to nuke again. The valk is decent from the get go with a mixture of range, mobility, tankiness, and damage output.

Those are the three main problems we found with the game. Didn't get to play too far into it, but I managed several hours of game play last night with it. First time playing a game for that long of a stretch in a long time.
