Arctic Silver 3 install - Look ok?

Check out this link to an install of Arctic Silver 3 on a P4 CPU. Does it look ok to you? I thought you never seated that HSF on the cpu and then removed it to blotch the bottom of the HSF? Wouldn't just applying a bit to the bottom of the HSF and then spread it out and wipe it off be better before seating it on the CPU?

Check this out!

I am getting ready to do this for the first time and I would appreciate any feedback and tips you have

I would put the AS3 on the heatsink first and then dab some of that onto the CPU. Reason is that it's hard to squeeze only enough AS3 for covering the CPU, it keeps coming out even after you release pressure

a perfectly fine way to install heatsink. the AS guide (very detailed) is similar http://www.articsilver.com/instructions.htm

its really not that fiddly, just get a little goop on the die and level it out, rub a little onto base of heatsink and then sit the heatsink on top. When you turn on comp, sit in bios for a short while to check temperatures are ok, better to know straight away rather than after the time it takes to install winxp or whatever

MarkFahey if you want to know how to use a product you should first try the product's web site like Davegod said. They should be the authority on proper use their product.

My stupid question of the day:

Do you need Arctic Silver or any thermal paste, or can you just plop the heatsink on the processor?

Thanks,
Dan

I ran my AMD T-Bird 1.1ghz without any thermal compound and it ran fine. But the temp was 5 degress higher then when I had Artic Silver3.

The answer to this question is a resounding yes.
Generally speaking of course.

Applying HS goop isn't rocket science... You gweech a dab on the CPU and plop the HS down. Fasten it with the clips or whatever and get on with life.

I can't believe the "detailed instructions" people go the lengths to make about this.

Save yourself the headache of reading all those instructions. I already have.

Supplies:
Isopropyl Alcohol (not less than 99%)
Lint free patchs
Small Credit Card (like a little half size one you get from grocery store/pet store)
Small pad to rest the CPU on
Small Plastic bag

1.) CLean both the core and HS with the Alcohol. Do not touch with bare fingers(human oils affect best possible affectiveness)

2.) Apply a little AS3 to the HS, and use the plastic bag to cover your finger and spread the AR3 around in circle motion to fill in any tiny tiny holes on the HS. Wipe off HS but only using lint free rag, do not use Alcohol to wipe off extra.

3.) Apply a very small amount to core of CPU. Make the layer as thin as you can to were you almost are spreading it TOO thin.

4.) Place Heatsink directly flat on core with as little of movement as possible. Connect the clips carefully so you don't move HS.

Done, after 2-3 days of use you will have even better temps.

I like to rub the as3 into the die first (very small amount) to fill any gaps, then apply some as shown on thier site with a plastic card.
