I've always gotten stuff like that off of ebay for that reason. I've always frowned on flat shipping costs for such small stuff.

Also, I've built a few computers, but I had a big gap in building them between Pentium 4 486 processors and newer core 2 processors. The latter all seem to now come with a silver compound like pad already on them. I'm assuming it's safe just to stick the processor on without using annoying paste now? I've built two computers now that way with the newer processors with the pads and just stuck the processors on the mobo without using paste. What are your thoughts?

Stock thermal pads/heatsinks are fine for stock speeds. Once you start overclocking you'll want a little better cooling, that starts with the heatsink and new TIM.

stock paste and HSF will even do decent overclocks on some chips.

i've never bought artic silver. having five versions of it kind of makes them look stupid...you'd think the first or second product they put out would pretty much max out how much heat transfer you can get in a thermal paste.

Yeah....Zalman looks stupid too with their 37 revisions of heatsinks that continue to dissipate more heat.

I run my E7200 with the stock HSF at 3.2GHz/1.12V

Gaming gets it up to the mid 50° range (with 3 hard drives, a non-exhausting 4830 and a single slow speed 120mm exhaust fan)

Even worked at at 3.6GHz/1.25V but it ran pretty hot

i'm, sorry, yeah, it totally takes ten tries to make thermal grease, which has been around for a hundred years. sorry i tried to put it nicely, let me say instead- either their engineers are stupid or they don't have any.

It's a marketing thing. It makes them seem more innovative or creative or customer/consumer oriented when they offer lots of choices---makes the consumer think that this company is really on top of its R&D, tailoring different products to different users... when it's pretty much all the same stuff packaged a bunch of different ways.

Toothpaste, shampoo, haircolor, makeup companies all do it, too.

Also, more on topic: I usually just get a little tube for $5 flat off eBay. Takes me months and months to get through one of them, so I'm not really interested in a big stockpile.

WoW, MX-2 for 6.99 shipped, nice indeed.

Forget that, 22 grams of Artic Silver ceramic for $9 shipped! I bought some stuff like this off ebay last time and paid close to $22 for it, this is such a steal and I am $2 lousy bucks shy of affording this! Man I gots to sell some stuff asap! Anyone need a SATA laptop 100gig HDD?

And Im sorry OP, with this link provided, it is really a better deal and I tried to keep my mouth shut, but 22 grams of stuff in a huge tube for $10~ shipped, my last one I had almost lasted me a year, and I was fixing Xbox 360's left and right, and making PC's like crazy with it, and I just run out. Now that I cant do that no more, this next one will last me a life time, and I just had to put my 2 cents in on it since a link was provided and I had used it.

To understand what 22 grams of grease looks like, here is my tube of it next to a full size BIC lighter

What I have in it now is what was left over in the tube, and I mixed in some Dielectric Silicone(SP) thermal grease, and its not working near as good as the original stuff did that was in the tube. Im getting by, but not near as well. But 22 grams is at the 8ml spot where Im at now on there. 22 grams is a crap load of thermal goo
