Hey guyz, what's up? Well, about 3 weeks ago, my bro's cpu overheated, and I was going to take the HS off, which I did, successfully. I go to take the cpu out...and what? where did it go??? It was stuck to the bottom of the HS!!! Well, his damaged the cpu I assume, or the overheating, cuz after I cleaned it and stuck it back in, the comp wouldn't work. Ended up giving him my p4 2.6 and bought myself a 3.0 northwood 800 fsb. Hooked everything up, applied the compound, etc. My question is a couple questions actually. How do i take off the heatsink w/o ripping out the cpu? And question #2, i have the thermalright slk-800u w/a panaflo fan. The panaflo runs at about 2200 rpms, and the cfm is 28 or 32? don't remember, (seems like i got more than 2 questions also...) anywayz, is that an ok fan? Cuz my questions #3 is, cpu idle temp is 35 C...is that right? I remember when I had this HS on my 2500xp, THE idle was 28...thanks for the help...

correct me if im wrong but AS5 isnt a bonding agent. Some thermal compounds are which is what was prolly on the cpu to begin with

so are you saying the cpu was dirty and then i put the AS5 on there? i thought i cleaned it rather well...hmm...what about my temp though? and my fan? is there a better fan that I can stick on my HS and is 35C idle high, or just about right? it gets to about 54-59 under full load

35 is about right I think. Many motherboards vary in how they report temps, so the same temp can be reported in a large range by different motherboards. Don't put too much as5 under the heatsink, and give it a few twisting motions before you pull it out. I've ripped a cpu out of the socket taking out a heatsink too, as5 can get some strong suction going sometimes. Good think the cpu still worked heh.

That Panaflo 12H fan is pretty nice, not quiet at all but not super noisy. I've tested it against a few other fans on my Thermalright ALX-800 and it bested many fans that were noisier and had better specified CFM, only losing to an industrial looking Sanyo Denki 80x32mm .56A fan that was really noisy. Basically, a good choice if you want good cooling without busting an eardrum, yet aren't afraid of a little noise. If you want quieter, get the 12M.

If you want to use thermal compound, you have to remove the thermal tape that is stuck under the heat sink. Then, you have to use alcohol to clean it.

The thermal tape has paraphine in it. After you install a heat sink with thermal tape under it on a CPU and run it, the paraphine melts and becomes like glue. Not too strong. But, strong enough that will pull the CPU out if you attempt to remove it cold!

The worst thing to do is to put thermal compound (like Arctic Silver) over the thermal tape!

If your cpu is sticking to your heatsink while removal, then you are using too much thermal compound.

Nice, thanks for the replies. Yah, I noticed that 12H was like 32db? Maybe a tad more, but it's all good, I had a tornado on there and that shizzle was WAY too loud, which is why I'm looking now. As for the thermal compound, I don't need to take the HS off anytime soon, but thanks for the heads, I know I cleaned the HS w/alcohol 99% isopropyl, very well, but I guess that time I ripped off the cpu along w/the heatsink it was cold like navid suggested. Thanks a lot guyz, really helped!
