Are 36" rounded IDE cables safe to use?

I picked up a few rounded 36" dual connection rounded IDE cables today at CompUSA for $1 each (clearance)...They shielded with a metal braid.

After a bit of reflection, however, I am hesitant to use them. Isn't 36" WAY out of the IDE spec, on top of rounded cables being (as I recall) also out of spec.

Are these cables actually safe to use? I see similar cables for sale all over the place, so obviously people are using them. But are there horror stories?

I have used them before. I believe there are enough safety factors built in to the 18-in spec to make it handle 30-in OK. It can't hurt anything physically. The worst that can happen is to lose data contact with a device connected to it. I would not connect a burner to a 30-in cable. They are more sensitive than HDDs.

No.

Are you planning on using these in a critical application? I mean if not, just buy them and use them and don't worry about it unless you start noticing abnormalities. You should be fine though...if there was a huge problem with using 36" IDE cables, they probably wouldn't sell them.
