so, I started my new job working in storage administration the other week, and since started, I've been working in the pit, a large room where all the support guys work out of. there's only two of us in my department working out of this office, so we're clustered off to the side in a corner.

I noticed something today, though... on the windows side of the room, you've got the blinds open, lights on, etc and on the other end of the room, where all the unix admin guys are, lights are off, blinds are closed, and the air must be like 10 degrees colder.

so what's the deal? is there something about unix that drives its users to seek out cave-like environments to hide away from world outside their command line?

That's funny. I JUST got done complaining that we were sitting outside in the sun at lunch and that I wanted to sit inside =)

I'm a Windows admin (though would honestly prefer unix admin), and detest sunlight and heat. Long live the dark & dreary 65-degree data dungeon!

I used to work in the dark a lot...

now not so much....

I can work regardless whether there is a light on or not.

at work the lights come on automatically...so don't have much choice in the lighting =)

Some guys I used to work with (well, and me too) always liked working in the dark.. we were mostly .Net programmers though, no Unix.

The lights in my office come on automatically when I walk in. The blinds are also always half-open to allow the sunlight to come in

<-- Uses some Unix at work

Unix guys just don't like going outside. They are used to just sitting around in the darkness. DUH lol Maybe it's just a coincidence or something

Seeing the other pale admins against a black, unlit background reminds them of their beloved command line.

Duh!

I am not a UNIX guy, unless you count ESX but I loved living in the dark hole of my old office. Now I am exposed to light and it sucks

I'd rather to keep the lights off if it's not sunny outside. Keeps it cooler.

But if there's sun, open the windows and pull the blinds up.
