Hi,Im watching this show called 'American Savage' on Discovery, where the host(Ric Savage) goes to various homes asking if they could use their property to dig and recover artifacts. But when asking most of the property owners would be like
''What are hell are you doing in my property? GET OUT !!!!
Are most Americans like this? Are they too territorial?
Sorry if its a narrow minded view,I'm just curious.thanks

I'm no territorial, but I wouldn't want someone digging up my property either, especially some stupid TV show.

How is not allowing someone to tear up your property "too territorial"? OP, are you saying you would have no issue with them bringing in dozers and such to rip up your yard just for a damn tv show?

We know our history well enough to know what happens when you just let the white man roll in and go nuts... and we're not about to fall for that

Also, ric savage looks like this:

So frankly he's lucky people just tell him "no" and not call the police.

most of the owners say to get out just when then ask for permission/introduction(no digging involved). If they want to ask for permission they sure have to get in to their property, right?then why this question

People don't like being bothered by grabby needy people.

They answer the door thinking it's something important and its just another sleazy salesman.

There is just a dislike of predatory commercialism in general.

If he was asking for directions or to recover a ball, or call the police or something like that, the outcome would be different.

As soon as you realize they are trying to sell something, recruit for a religion, or want something of yours, or want to change you or your opinion on something, attitude changes to defensive and GTFO.

If I wanted a fucking bible for example, Ill go to church and ask for one. Leave me alone otherwise.

Door to door solicitation in general is just viewed as rude. People's negative response to unwanted solicitation at their door is no different from throwing junk mail or spam into the trash on principle without even looking at it or before you even get back inside.

Ads, spam, solicitation, etc, is in your face and predatory feeling, so people get in your face right back. Knocking on your door for shit you don't care about is basically old school spam, like a giant real life pop up window covering what you were reading and scrolling with you to block the page. But its worse because you can't just close that page and say "screw those guys, never going there again". Its AT YOUR HOUSE. Your safe place, your escape from all the bullshit you hate in the world, where everything goes perfect your way, and yet ... here it is: the world invading your home where you can't just close the browser and retreat.

Ever deleted spam and felt irritated? Ads ever ruined your browsing experience, like causing the page to hang while loading shit you don't even care about? Same thing when someone is knocking on your door, only worse.

Even worse because you may have been busy, stuck under a car working on it, and you had to get out, wash your hands, take off your geasy shoes, and answer the door, and THIS is what its for? FU.

Also, its reality TV. They selectively edit the encounters to only show the confrontational ones because that's what couch potatoes like to see on TV.

People are dicks. IME, it was the suburban turds that were the worst. They move in from the city, and become kings of their little dung heap. That wasn't 100%. Sometimes the old time farmers thought I was stealing their land. The suburbanites were the worst, and most petty though.

He can come to my house and dig - he just needs to dig 3 x 3 holes so that I can plant fruit trees in them.

Not only would they be tearing the yard up, but they'd be doing it for profit.

Reality TV and its producers need to just go away. I'm sick of their attempts at entertainment...I think the only 'reality' tv show I've been impressed with is American Pickers and I can only handle that in small doses.

I'm not American so I can't comment on that but if Ric savage turned up on my property he would be told to GTFO. If on the other hand channel 4 turned up with time team to do an archeological dig I wouldn't have a problem at all.

"What's the expected value of the artifacts you intend to dig up? I own the mineral rights on everything except oil/natural gas, which I have leased out. - Or, in other words, what's in it for me?"

"Will you restore my property after the digging?"

I can easily be swayed in either direction. If they wanted to dig through the top 2 feet of soil in my field, looking for native American arrow heads - sure, go ahead. You don't owe me a cent, as long as when you're done, you rake it all smooth, and reseed the fields (including any necessary treatments (lime) or fertilizer to get a decent blend of grasses growing well).

If it's, "we believe that a couple hundred years ago, gold, with a current value of several million dollars was buried somewhere in your field." "Are you sure??" "Yes, we're positive." "Go away." Followed by purchasing my own bulldozer & excavator.

Too territorial? Why would I let some random douchenozzle dig up my yard for no benefit of my own?

Maybe because we suburbanites actually care about our property and dont want it to turn into a complete shithole like the city...
