Another new 1037U system, the "Zoostorm Mini Desktop PC".

£155.52 (~$250 USD), and it looks like the case is provisioned for a thin optical drive. It also looks like a thin-style motherboard, so there should be room for internal HDDs/SSDs as well. It's sort of hard to tell much beyond that, because the specs on the website are not completely correct. (1x PCI-e x16 slot AND 2x PCI-e x1 slots??)

http://www.ebuyer.com/570083-zoostorm-mini-desktop-pc-7873-1207

I just came across the motherboard that I think is in this one... the Pegatron NM70-T1.

http://shop.kbench.com/09shop/?this_in=09Detail&seq=5325

In terms of specs, this one actually looks really nice. 19V DC power, USB 3.0, thin form factor, two RAM slots, PCIe 2.0 x4 (open-ended slot with space behind it!), and
mini PCIe x2 (one mSATA capable).

99,000 KRW is about $94 USD.

If you really want to minimize the variables, how about just taking one of the two sticks out of the ECS? That way *everything* is the same except the memory configuration.

The ECS is a clean config that has a 2x2GB configuration of DDR3 1333mhz memory and a 2.5" SSD

The Giada board is currently in my microserver box, hooked up to 5 HDDs and has a 1x4GB configuration of DDR3 1600mhz memory (according to cpuid, it's actually running at 1600mhz!)

I plan on pulling out the HDDs and controller card from the Giada system and making a windows 7 x64 bit install for it.

EDIT: nevermind, I found a 1x4GB 1333mhz stick of memory, I'll perform a single channel and dual channel benchmark pass and post the results.

that's from 3rd party seller on amazon. NM70I2 is also available from ebay at $71.99 shipped, I think the seller imicro is mp3superstore aka superbiiz.

I just noticed Newegg is once again stocking the ECS NM70-I2(1.0). ($67.99 plus $6.98 shipping after promo code)

I'll have to keep that in mind next time I see the "discontinued" description next to a newegg item in the future.

Nope - check a bit back in this thread, there were some significant variations in temps for the Foxconn boards... and one of the industrial systems (Habey?) also had some wild temperature swings for a reviewer. I can't remember, but I think there was someone else that had problems too? :hmm:

My problems were pretty specific to the cooler fitment and thankfully, easy to sort out. Temps would start around 90 and just went up to 105c and stayed there. No variations or fluctuations.

Ok, did the dual channel vs single channel memory test on the ECS NM70-I2. Used Passmark 8.0 as it is fairly quick to process. Both configurations were 4GB of 1333mhz memory.

Single Channel:
PassMark Rating
This Computer 1099
CPU Mark
This Computer 1922
2D Graphics Mark
This Computer 359.9
3D Graphics Mark
This Computer 228.9
Memory Mark
This Computer 1169
Disk Mark
This Computer 4061

Dual Channel:
PassMark Rating
This Computer 1137
CPU Mark
This Computer 1940
2D Graphics Mark
This Computer 362.7
3D Graphics Mark
This Computer 239.2
Memory Mark
This Computer 1340
Disk Mark
This Computer 4026

These scores were the median of 3 runs, just to give an idea of how synthetic this benchmark is, the difference between the multiple runs gave a difference of less than 1%

The Memory Mark score was the most affected at over 15% difference.

The 2nd highest score affected was the 3D score with a difference of around 4% which may not be a lot, but I feel it is significant because the difference was consistently there.

If anyone would like additional tests run with different benchmarks, I'd be happy to run them as long as I don't have to pay out of pocket for software or hardware costs.

I think they were the same issue - just that yours was more extreme. One of the others was a poorly fitted cooler that *partially* worked... so the idle temperatures were lower than yours, but it would still peg the limit under load.

Bleh, I guess some manufacturers need go back to class on how to build a proper cooling system.

Thanks for the update on dual channel, looks like for 1037u nm70 system the memory bandwidth is not as critical as to AMD system, especially for CPU intensive benchmarks.

I see the above motherboard (with PCIe 2.0 x4) comes with a tall I/O shield seen below (even though it is thin-mini itx):

(Just out of curiosity) I wonder if that tall I/O shield could be modified to take an expansion slot bracket and then installed with a low profile video card in either the stock case or the Mini-Box M350 (see example below of a thin mini-itx board with a PCI-E x1 expansion card in a M350):

I'm sure it could! It might even be easiest to use the short I/O shield as a starting point - then you're just filling in sections, instead of cutting.

Bought one after reading a review £55 from ebuyer. Added a Kingston cheap SSD , a 4gb mem (1333) and an FSP 300w itx power supply. Screwed it all onto a piece of plywood as I'm still looking for a case. I cannot hear the system even under load! Congrats to FSP. The Cpu gets 1714 on passmark so should handle a good medium graphics card. 3d06 gave me 2710- Cpu 1900 s/m2 861 and h/dsm3 1135.
As the little power supply claims 20amps on 2 rails I bought a GTX460 768mb on ebay. So now 3d06 gave me 11145 - cpu 1920 s/m2 4977 and hd sm3 6652. So I don't think the cpu is a bottleneck. Shame about the video card noise.
Temps on cpuid h/w monitor (running in the background) cpu-min 34 and max55. but its not in a case. Very pleased , overall conclusion is a lot of fun in a biscuit tin.

Hi, I'm new here but I followed this thread from the start, as I've been looking to build/buy a htpc/nas combo on the cheap and I like the idea of using the 1037u. I am based in the UK and I actually wrote to Zoostorm about their mini desktop pc and they got back to me fairly quickly. You are right about the motherboard! here is their full answer:

"Yes the PC will support a slimline optical drive, but will not support additional SATA hardware.
The hard drive used is a 320GB WD Scorpio Blue 2.5" SATA, you can replace this with a larger one if you so wish.

The motherboard currently used is Pegatron NM70-T1 thin mini-ITX board & PSU, Celeron 1037u"

I also asked them to confirm whether the motherboard comes with a tall I/O shield and whether there is a way this machine can take an expansion slot bracket for PCI-E tuner card for example. Their reply :

"Unfortunately the unit will not support expansion cards such as a TV tuner card, but will obviously support a USB alternative."

I was thinking of buying this and adding an SSD and a 2 or 4TB HDD - but now I'm not so sure. I've never built a machine before, but hope that it is something that I can do as I've frequently tinkered with computers adding and removing components (albeit last time I've done this was in 2003!).

I would like to put together something that has a bluray drive, room for 2 HDDs (preferably 3.5" as they're cheaper) , an very small SSD (for OS, I will run a light linux distro so 8gb should be ok ?). and ideally, room for a pcie dvb-t2 tuner as well as usb 3.0 for future storage expansion if needed.
Any recommendation on motherboard + case ?
I just need this to play 1080p video (via XBMC), while running SABnzbd and couchpotatoe in the background. and with an SMB share occasionally accessed by other computers in the house.

Cheers !

Here's a new review of the Gigabyte BRIX GB-XM12-3227, the first-generation BRIX with the i3-3227U CPU. As part of the review, they compare the 3227U BRIX against the 1037U BRIX, so there's some good data about the 1037U BRIX in the charts.

http://tweakers.net/productreview/89133/gigabyte-brix-gb-xm12-3227.html

Tweakers.net's results show the 1037U BRIX consuming 9W at idle, 15W watching a 1080P H264 movie, and 35W when running a CPU benchmark. That data nicely confirms the measurements from the other review of the 1037U BRIX by hardware.info:

Found a place that had tested the 1037U BRIX. 10.1W at idle, 31.9W at load (3DMark06 Max).:thumbsup:

Another review of the MSI Wind Box DC111-026EU:

http://tweakers.net/productreview/89162/msi-wind-box-dc111-026eu.html

It looks like the 1037U BRIX beats the 1037U Wind Box in most of the benchmarks, sometimes by a significant margin. I wonder why?

Could be thermal throttling or profiling where the bios doesn't allow the CPU to exceed a certain threshold in thermals. The Brix has a much more significant heatpiped heatsink and fan assembly. The one in the Wind Box is tiny in comparison.

Also, it could have something to do with dual vs single channel memory. The Brix has 2 memory slots, the Wind box only has one. when I tested the Giada and the ECS boards, I noticed a significant difference in CPU performance between the 2 1037u boards. The difference in CPU performance only shows up in some CPU benchmarks, specifically superpi.

Hey guys, just a bit of an update on the Gigabyte c1037un-eu board: I got a 4-pin fan, and it appears the CPU 4-pin header is hardwired for max speed, (yes, quite weird, although you do have to remember that this is a passively cooled board) while the 4-pin system fan right next to it can only be controlled with PWM (#2 pwm in speedfan, in case anyone is wondering).
