I believe somehow its more racially inclined...there are far more suicides in asia for some weird reason. In Japan and Korea, where i have friends and relatives, they say its a weekly affair. Commonplace activity for children, women, and men. Bad grades, rejection, loss of job, loss of promotion, love..etc. What do u think?..coz of religion or what? It just seems more acceptable over there and seems to be some romantic mysticism.

from birth, it is engrained (sp?) into your head that you must succeed... grades, job, etc. There are those who can't handle it and put things in perspective.

Constant pressure from parents and culture to excel. Got a 95 on a test? That's considered low. Parents expect 100. No excuses. Trying doing that for 18 years.

peer (and family) pressure is very high

on the other hand, this is why in general asian people are more dedicated (successful) than other people

You could say that about a lot of Christians too, but they're still Christians.

at least there's the whole church going experience, or influence in schools, friends, media, news, etc.
Quotes from the bible are pretty rampant in the western world.
in buddhism, u hardly derive anything unless u make the effort to go seek it. i know more about buddhism than all my 'buddhist' asian friends...my buddhist caucasian friends is a diff story.

Some parents mellow, most do not. However, in Asia, you are pressure to do well all the time, from everything aspect of life. In the US, one can at least get a break from the pressure with friends.

Totally agree it has to do with the pressure to succeed. For many other cultures, that pressure is not there. There are pros and cons to this, of course.

Well I dunno if it's true, but I read somewhere a while back that close to 90% of all people in Japan participate in either Shinto or Buddhist traditions/celebrations/rituals.

Whether the societal pressure to succeed is religious or not, I don't have a clue. But it's not the same as Asians in America because at least Asians here only face it from their parents, not from society as a whole (at least not in the same way).

for the most part, only by name and some traditions/customs/ceremonies.

Well, it's the same as a lot of Christians. There are plenty of "Christians" that know jack sh!t about the bible, or at best a very elementary understanding of it.

It's cultural.

They have a "Must live up to expectations!" stigma.
