those white people can all move together and cry themselves a river. :|

Many white parents say they're leaving because the schools are too academically driven and too narrowly invested in subjects such as math and science at the expense of liberal arts and extracurriculars like sports and other personal interests.

yeah...like that sh|t ever put men in space or sent men to the moon. my HS was 90% white, you didn't hear me crying. boohoo.

My highschool was 98% white, and the few asian people that did go there didn't run away. Why is it news when its the other way around?

Sure academics are important but is overtaking everything in the lives of those students?

You need to have a balance of extracurricular activities and academics.

Maybe the kind of pressure to succeed was too much?

Those Asian students with parents whose primparily language isn't English tend to stress academics more because it would obviously help their kids in the future to go into better schools and obtain better jobs. Was the pressure to do so well absolutely cutthroat where students wouldn't help one another because it would remove the edge?

I really hope not. There is being competitive, but I do think people should also be human. Life isn't about being better than everyone. I know some people at my university who gets really good scores, abou 90+ in a Engineering class where the curves are normally 50-65. These people don't like to work with others so that they can get the best score, but I really don't understand that level of competitiveness (sp?).

I agree that we do spend waaaaaay too much on sports, but school is about more than staring at books, especially HS.

Sports are important, and academics aren't everything. That's all.

I know of some people that didn't want to live in that district because of the imbalance in the academics (and they are Asian/Indian born in the US).

Apparently some of the elementary or middle schools don't even have PE!

"Oh no, the school's not 98% white, better move away"

I swear, Americans are SO racist...

Personally, I think having a more competitive class is a good thing, since it pressures you to do your best.

"Many of my Asian friends were convinced that if you were Asian, you had to confirm you were smart. If you were white, you had to prove it,"
Hahaha, looks like the shoe's on the other foot now.

Wah.

There's nothing wrong with putting in extra time and dedication to get an edge. The point that studies in the maths and sciences are emphasized at the expense of the liberal arts is a concern, but one that will likely be self-corrected.

no, there isn't anything wrong in getting a leg up.. but if the students already took the course in summer school, why the hell are they taking it again? sure, you can blame the kid for not taking inititive to take the summer class.. but dammit, it was summer, there's more to life than school school school.

The article claims the school focuses a lot on science and math... if true, that shouldn't be. what happened to being well rounded?

I'm sure most of the asian are better reader/writers than most of the white kids also.

Students who are active in extracurricular(sp?) activities are less likely to use drugs or alcohol.

I don't think that's a causal relationship

One of my asian friend's is the best writer I have ever met and possibly even read. He dominated a private white school with an emphasis on liberal arts. That said he is also great at science and math.

I feel that getting ahead should be so that you are not only reaching a higher level of understanding, but are then able to bring others to your vantage point.

Thanx,

No, whites are lazy. That's why they blame Bush for economic troubles. While the asians are focusing on the power courses which work towards advancement (science and maths) we're more interested in liberal arts and extracurricular activities. It says right in the article. They don't accept responibility for their actions, they just assess blame.

maybe we asians should make white people take tests to get into our schools now. But have the tests written in mandarin.

And as for my original comment, yeah I do love football. And yeah, around where I'm from a 4.37 GPA is basically top 10. People wonder why a lot of 4.0 students dont get into UC Berkeley. Because at my school there were like 10 people that had 5.0 GPA's their senior year. It's stupid.

And yeah our football team is notoriously bad. But that's because De La Salle is 5 minutes from us.

You have to stay competitive if you are going to survive the growing engineering powerhouses in mainland Asia.

Luckily the extremely cultural biased tests balance out the difference between American born whites and immigrant asian kids.

What are they b!tching about. You'd think they want them to go there as they are worked hard and the school gets great results!

Here in England people WANT to go to the school that gets top grades.

Ironically enough, if you attend an Asian language course in college (I took Mandarin), you'll find that the white students are the most studious. The Asian kids are in the class for an easy grade or just to learn more about a language that they casually speak at home.

Two comments:
1) If everyone in my class had already taken the math class I was taking and I was being graded against them I'd be pissed too, whether they are Asian, Caucasian, or green and purple
2) Extracurriculars DO have their place in school, it helps people become rounded human beings. What's the point of studying 70 hours a week and being completely socially inept? There are far too many people in EE that have 4.0 GPAs and are socially inept because they spend all their time studying or just generally not participating in group activities. I don't know how many times I've been in a group with a guy with a 4.0 whose resume I'd shed if it ever crossed my desk.
