70% just plain idiotic
20% can't even speak English and fail because their teachers have nothing to say to them

I'd say the school was 60% white, 30% hispanic (Mexican), 5% black, 5% Asian/other
My highschool actually had an unofficial race war between the more violent of whites and hispanics.

I went to school in Yukon, Ok and they were very good.

being asian is great. the sad thing is, most people assume that we are putting in the time to get the top grades when it really isn't all that hard.

hmmm Prep school do a sport every quarter take all honors classes get at least a 50/50 split between As and Bs add in a club or two an your done. GPA isnt everything. to me it is better to be challenged then to try to be perfect all of the time without fully pushing yourself.

And to all the lazy white kids out there GTFO

No, we prefer AutoX. Watching cars drive in circles is kinda boring. Never understood it at all.

Although I'm white, I view things the same way. I never study very much, if at all, for anything (granted, I am only a sophomore in HS), but I'm also not going to work my ass off more than I need to for just a couple percentage points, unlike some people at my school. Diminishing marginal returns, anyone?

Types of schools in my perception (possibility of being biased):

Regular Ass HS (A few really smart people. but most morons, not particularly hard to get straight A's)
Easy HS (The smartest people are still marginal, and getting all A's comes with an IQ over 110)
Super HS (AZN's rule and try hard and "earn" high grades, but are not particularly special, usually in wealthy areas)

Regular Private School (Rich white kids who are stupid go here to get special attention and better grades from kind teachers)
Elite Private (The uber-rich whites of average intelligence but priviledge are mixed with talented minorities, everyone gets a B+ except the minorities who are there for academic merit and being pushed from home, they get A's but have to work really hard for them)

Moral of the story: Grades don't mean ******; do something for the world and I'll give you a highfive. If not, keep trying.

Edit... to be honest, SAT scores to really tell a lot. My private school had an average SAT score around 1400, but the people with top scores near 1600 had grades anywhere from C+ to A. Plenty of people had great grades and couldn't break 1400.

Sure academics are important but is overtaking everything in the lives of those students?

You need to have a balance of extracurricular activities and academics.

Maybe the kind of pressure to succeed was too much?

Those Asian students with parents whose primparily language isn't English tend to stress academics more because it would obviously help their kids in the future to go into better schools and obtain better jobs. Was the pressure to do so well absolutely cutthroat where students wouldn't help one another because it would remove the edge?

i myself am a senior at Monta vista High and this article is full of BS. sure its competitive but not all the asians in the school are about overtaking each other when it comes to grades. The school has a good atmosphere. better than other school i went to .

Socially the school is getting better at doing various activities during luch or before holidays.

the article is sort of hillarious actually because the quotes which said by PTA members were taken out of context and i know this for a fact becase my friend mom knew the mother who was quoted in the first page.

fricken reporters.

I swear, Americans are SO racist...

Personally, I think having a more competitive class is a good thing, since it pressures you to do your best.

"Many of my Asian friends were convinced that if you were Asian, you had to confirm you were smart. If you were white, you had to prove it,"
Hahaha, looks like the shoe's on the other foot now.

Americans are racist...it's sad that where you grow up really shapes your views on life.

ugh its true. Im in Canada, and the uni im currently in, Laurier, is pretty small but well known for its business program and ranked #1 uni in McLeans last year.

I worked my ass of in gr12, along with some pretty big deaths within the family, my father being one of them, and I only managed to come out with a low 80's average. My school is in a more ghetto area, but all the enhanced kids of the city are bussed here [Mississauga, one of the largest cities in Canada...]

Anyways, I get into the honours economics program of Laurier.. im a bit upset that I didnt get into the business admin program but i guess my marks werent top notch. I get here, and i swear a lot of these white people are total dumbasses. i am chinese-vietnamese mix, and during a meal with a bunch of people here, my neighbour, a slutty-acting but fat-ass-ugly blonde asks "so like you guys and japanese people... you're all just like... cousins right?" I stared at her in disbelief, thinking shes GOTTA be kidding right?

nope. not at all.

She got into the business admin program.

I didnt. THAT is BULLSHIT.

seems to me like white people just get an extra boost while keeping the hard working first gens

[note: she doesnt study, she wants to drop out after first semester because uni is 'too much for her' and she wants to be a dancer. so im not judging her on just that one thing. she also acts like a total dolt too]

Asians can be as academically competitive as they want so that later in life they can do grunt technical labor for their white bosses. Don't be surprise that these bosses were probably not great students. They are the beer guzzling, football watching, stripclub hopping, former frat boys.

But regardless asians still have the highest income in the US & a lot of asians own their own businesses thus being their own boss.
