Having used the 1.33 Bay Trail Venue for a while, it is still pretty snappy. It doesn't seem to be suffering from lack of 4GB of RAM at all.

Granted, I don't think I'd do Photoshop on it or anything, but I feel pretty confident on saying it could probably cover 90% of the vast majority's computing usage.

I tested the Asus T-100 2 GB/32 GB and Baytrail is still sluggish due to Windows 8. There is a lag (~3 secs) in keyboard track pad input and Youtube is barely playable @ 720P.

the T100 has been executed badly. there is keyboard/trackpad lag, but most likely because of bad drivers and/or bad hardware (kb/trackpad goes to sleep if you don't use it after a while, it takes 1-2s for it to wake up. Disable the special features in the touchpad driver like edge detection, it works slightly better that way, or test with a dedicated keyboard/mouse)

youtube, i'm able to play 1080p videos without problems or lag or tearing. bad flash plugin?

It's not incorrect. I can't playback 720p or 1080p smoothly. It does play, but is maybe like 20fps on so on each. Noticeable stutter.

Which is weird, because I loaded XBMC on this thing and haven't had any troubles playing 720p, 1080i or 1080p content.

EDIT: It's Flash. /feign surprise

I used Chrome for my first test. Had the stuttering video. Fired up YouTube in IE in modern mode (no flash) and the same videos that stuttered played buttery smooth in both 1080p and 720p.

I could even Reddit at the same time it was playing.

well there's also the crappiness of the MBA screen, but I assume you'd wait for a retina one
Yeah, for my next laptop, it MUST have Retina or no sale, and I'd run text sizes at the equivalent of a screen at 1/4 of its resolution (which is default for Retina MacBook Pros).

ie. For a 12" 2304x1440 screen, I'd be running text sizes similar to what they'd be like on a 1152x720 screen.

It also needs to be under 3 lbs. For a 12", well under 3 lbs.

The better question is as Android tablets continue to improve, both the hardware and the OS, will the demand for Windows machines (specifically laptops) go down? I say yes.

I still want to see Chrome OS and Android merged. Or else Android made more keyboard and mouse friendly. It works with a keyboard and mouse (and wired networking), but there are strange usability problems, since it's not really built for it.

Hasn't it already?
It has, but Google continues to pass up opportunities to really take the market with large format/convertible optimizations. Honestly, since Jobs' death it seems like Google is being run by Tim Cook too.

For the mass market most likely no. For me the existence of 8" pocketable Windows tablet basically destroyed any desire for other tablets.

-Avoid stupid politics plays like Amazon not releasing their instant player on base Android
-Access to Office with OneNote alone singlehandedly wins on the productivity front
-Just sync a DualShock 3 and I can leverage my existing Steam library for games rather than trying to find the handful of decent iOS/Android titles lost in a sea of freemium garbage
