Are Beats headphones worth the money?

This thread cracks me up. We've got folks with modded dollar store cans all the way up to mega buck ear porn. What's clear to me is that if it produces sound somebody is going to love it. So even though I've never even had a pair of beats near my earholes I'm giving them a big :thumbsup:

*shrug* I have both. Only reason I got the Momentums is I needed a pair of closed cans with low sound leakage for a cube farm environment.

Although ... I'm tempted to try out a pair of MrSpeakers Mad Dogs at home just to see what the fuss is all about

Plan on trying out the MrSpeakers selection this summer during the DC hifi meet up. I believe MrSpeakers is one of the sponsors, and if not I know several people who are bringing their own.

I would love to hear them, but knowing they are based off $130 headphones, it's hard to drop $450 for a pair... even if they are modded to hell.

headphone threads go awry 10x faster than AMDvsNvidia threads. The matter is too complex, with intricate scientific issues, personal differences, market issues such as price and availability, difficulty in communication opinions and needs, the sheer number of models and makes in existence ..

in the end it's just easier to recommend a very generic, flat sounding set for a low price and be done with it. If, and only after the person has owned a "normal" pair of cans (open, no particular brilliance in the highs or depth in the bass, with as little coloring as you can get for a hundred bucks), they decide they wants something particular, then they can ask for a specific recommendation.

Otherwise, "i need a good pair of headphones" means nothing.

Yes, there is a lot of "reality distortion" around apple products, but really they do have substance...Beats don't really have substance...they're all marketing towards Dre's subjective tastes that is it.

Personally, I'm wondering if they jumped the shark on this purchase. Not that a $3.2B loss could even hurt them, but this doesn't seem like an Apple-esque acquisition. Hope they pull a Steve and get pissed that the word got leaked, and abort the deal.

Beats are a fashion statement product. Some people prefer that over sound quality. If you're after great sound, look elsewhere.

This isn't consistent with apple, who sets their own trends and styles.

Why not acquire spotify or pandora? That makes more sense. Next thing we know, we're going to be seeing MacBooks and iPads with beats audio headphone jacks...Tim cook is ultimately a Compaq man, huh?

True, remember when ipod were becoming really popular in 2003? The Bose tri-ports were the headphone of choice back then. $179.99 plastic headphones sold millions and millions. And they sucked. I received a set as a gift over 10 years ago. man, I hated them and exchanged for some Shure earbuds.

Thankfully my hearing is shot so I can't appreciate all of the extra range that quality speakers or headphones would do for me. I have a cheapass logitech 2.1 sound system on my pc and generic earbuds for my mp3 player.
