Personally i like dogs more, but if you aren't going to have the time for it, get a cat.

cats shed their hair everywhere. very annoying. litter box stinks up the house too.

You can get a dog that doesn't shed and teach it to shlt outside.

well it depends on the cat and dog totally. for ex, my dog makes enough money to cover all his own costs plus all the costs for my cat as well (he is a breeding dog) sigh. wish i could get paid for breeding.

I have a cat and two dogs. A cat is definitely a low maintenance pet.

I am not sure.. I guess it depends, some are just not happy with dinner and a movie.

I like dogs, but I definitely don't have time to be there for it. Puppies learn some pretty bad habits if you leave it home all day while you're at work. I've rarely seen a well behaved dog that was left home every day as a puppy.

I got a kitten free from a coworker about a month ago. Someone had thrown two live kittens away in his dumpster. They would never have been rescued if he hadn't taken the trash out that night. He had to give them away because his dog wanted to eat them. They've both found homes.

My kitten's name is Diode. She doesn't seem to mind being left home for the 9-12 hours I'm often out, but she's always happy to see me. She comes running when I talk to her.

Please don't get a puppy if you can't be with it almost full time for the first year of it's life. I think a cat is better for your current situation, and you can usually find one for free, or adopt one from the animal shelter for cheap.

<< i need a pet because its something to come home to and they are usually faithful >>

After your post here I can see where faithfulness might be an issue for you.

<< If you do decide to go ahead and get either, please make sure you're going to keep it for life. Don't be like many other young people and realize later they can't keep the animal and drop it off at the pound. >>

I couldn't agree with you more, pacfanweb

I'm a dog person myself but I'd suggest you get a cat. Dogs need lots of attention whereas cats are pretty independent. IMO with you being a college student, you probably wouldn't have alot of time to put into a dog.

Whatever you decide to get, keep in mind that vet bills come along with them. It's not cheap to own an animal. There's more to it than just food and water.

Get a cat.

Don't have to walk them
They clean themselves

Save a kitten from the pound... They usually have all their shots and are already fixed/neutered.

I don't like little rat like dogs, I like big dogs. Labs, Goldens, Shepards, Great Danes (I'd love to own a Great Dane one day, they look so cool, and they're HUGE!), etc. If I were to ever get a dog I'd have to be living in a house with a big yard so the dog could run around all it wants to.

I wouldn't mind a cocker spaniel though, that's the smallest dog I could deal with. We had to cockers when I was a kid. A very dominant, very big for a cocker, male, and a smaller, shyer female. They got along with myself and my sister great and they were like best friends to each other. And I love their fluffy ears. Rub a dogs ears and it'll be your friend for life, or at least until the next person does.

I don't like cats. The ones all of my relatives have aren't very friendly, they run away when we come in. Dogs always come up to us and wag their tails and bark and stuff. They seem to be much friendlier than cats towards people they don't know.
