Do you mean to buy or to maintain or both? I think dogs in general are more expensive to purchase if you want a pure breed instead of a mutt. I would recommend saving an animal from a humane society
Also, as far as maintenance goes, it depends on the size of the animal.

cats are cheaper and easier. - if that's your main criteria...

They are very different pets.

Get a Cat, you don't need to walk them, train them (well except you may have to stick em in the litter box ONCE) Cats are very independent and don't cost as much.

I 2nd cjchaps's idea of gettin one from the humane society. (Don't worry, if you look around you can get a VERY nice cat from there... just takes time)

If you are going to be away from home a lot, I would recommend a cat because they don't seem to care as much when they are left alone. A dog usually gets lonely when they don't recieve a lot of attention.

cjchaps, that only works if you have more than one cat... if it is one cat alone, I can see it scratching up all yer furniture to get you back for it... Heh, all of my cats front claws are de-clawed. Might wanna consider this if you don't want to have scratched furniture...

Dogs cost more to buy if u don't is given on but they eat the food thats left after your dinner (cats don't) Dogs can be trained (if u enjoy that) so dogs has a better price/performace ratio.

i had one for about 4 months, and I loved em. It was my friends so i had to give it up, but i think she wants me to take care of it this summer, which might be bad since they need so much light (i live in CA, electric rateville)

here are some pics of the evil bitch!:

Just on that I would get a cat if I were you. Dogs need to have company more than cats do imo.

I'd go for a cat. Cat's are very independent and they usually train themself to use the litter box. Cats are much cheaper than dogs, fwict. IMO, it's very satisfying to come home and sit on the couch reading a book and petting a cat

I have 6 dogs and 6 cats.....cats are definitely cheaper. If you assume that the vet bills will be about the same, you're down to weekly expenses, and cats eat less.

If you do decide to go ahead and get either, please make sure you're going to keep it for life. Don't be like many other young people and realize later they can't keep the animal and drop it off at the pound.

In terms of cash, they are about the same.

In terms of time, dogs need more of it since you need to walk them frequently.
