They are legal, but think it's only the consumer grade ones. They are also not sold around here. Have to go in the states for those, or perhaps southern cities here. I know once my grandma brought a bunch at camp but she had bought them during her trip to the states.

But our close proximity to Wyoming (where everything is legal) means no one cares and the cops only have enough power to enforce around the major areas.

Also, flare guns don't count as fireworks

Some of the best 4th of Julys we ever had was when we lived in Wyoming. My kids still talk about shooting of rockets and such in 6" of fresh snow...and it was snowing like crazy at the time...Rockets would shoot into the air, then POOF a bright colored flash in the falling snow. Couldn't really see the explosion, just the sudden burst of color in the sky.
We went to Monterey a few years back for the 4th. Watched fireworks in the incoming fog. Very similar effect...

The county where I live hasn't banned "safe & sane" fireworks...yet, but it's coming. all the counties around us already have.
Drove down to the local "A" league baseball park last night for fireworks after the game. Not bad...Tonight, the local Jaycees are putting on a laser-light show in lieu of real fireworks.
I think we'll go to one of the surrounding towns and watch their aerial display instead.

See I can see can understand the drought thing but it our right in this Great Free Country of ours for people to blow off thier appendages because of their own ignorance.

Why yes they are. We travel to Myrtle Beach (2 hours) to get the good stuff.

Only the weak "safe and sane" ones are legal here for 1 day of the year. The cops used to be pretty lax when it came to the illegal stuff that shoots into the air. Then a couple years ago some idiot had a ton of the illegal fireworks stored in his house and there was an accident where the house basically blew up. Since then the local cops have a "zero tolerance" approach and are out in force looking for aerial fireworks.

Tonight I saw a kid get a 1000$ fine for having a small skyrocket ready to light when the cops rolled up. Another person got a 500$ fine even though there were no illegal fireworks found with him but the cops said they saw them being shot from his property. The cops were driving by our block every 10 minutes or so.

I wish the cops would drive through MY neighborhood...they could raise enough revenue to pay the city budget for the next two years! We usually have fireworks shows that rival some of the smaller towns in the area.

Speaking of smaller towns, we drove about 30 miles tonight to the "sprawling metropolis" of Livingston, CA...the headquarters of Foster Farms...I'm sure most of you have heard of their chicken...
This little town of < 15000 people put on one of the nicest fireworks displays I've seen in years...and was rated as the biggest display in the valley for this holiday.
