According to this study, gamers are all sorts of badass!

More likely to play sports, more likely to go out with friends, twice as likely to go out on dates than nongamers? Holy shit, apparently gamers are a bunch of badasses winning football games and banging cheerleaders (or the quarterback, for the female and gay minority).

Yeah, I'm definitely the go-to guy for tech news and advice at work and for family. Going out to movies, eh, more like people come over to watch movies that haven't come out yet on my HDTV and HT system

But yeah, I think we can easily break down the latest tech to layman's terms and relate it to the masses. I've been asked for advice on everything from upgrades for the school network to laptops to mp3 players to HDTV/HT systems and upgrades.

LoL.

So wait, IGN did an interview with gamers, asked them about their personal lives, and this is what they came up with? Hardly scientific, but funny none-the-less. Let's all be realistic and take this one with a few hundred million grains of salt

No, the vast majority of gamers are losers, that's why the stereotype has existed for so long, now they (we?) are just so numerous, that we can change popular opinion.

Pasty white and flabby is the new sexy man, get used to it. Gonna go dust off my extra tight sweat pants and giggle in front of the mirror a little bit.

"Gamers are also twice as likely as nongamers to pay a premium for the newest technology on the market "

That was probably the truest statement in the article. The rest just seems like pretty feeble reasoning to pat ourselves on the back.

"Gamers are twice as likely to go out on dates as nongamers in a given month "

Yeah....we're desperate. Quantity and Quality are two very different things. Blind diabetic fat chic? I'm so on it.

That's incorrect, gamers of today are no longer the stereotype nerds in their puberty with their faces plastered by acne.

Breaking the Stereotype: The Case of Online Gaming
MARK D. GRIFFITHS, PH.D., MARK N.O. DAVIES,

Abstract:

Despite the rise of computer games as a leisure phenomenon, there has been relatively little research into this area. Furthermore, almost all of the research to date has concentrated on arcade or console games. More recently, the Internet has become a new medium in which players can play videogames. Since there is no published research in this area, some ?benchmark? data on which future research can build was collected from two online gaming fan sites. Sociodemographics showed that the majority of players were male (approximately 85%). Over 60% of players were older than 19 years. The data provide clear evidence that the game clientele is very much an adult profile and suggest a different picture to the stereotypical image of an adolescent online gamer. The stereotype of the typical online player being a socially withdrawn young male with limited sex role identity appears to be misplaced.

I'd have to go find a newer study though, this one is from 2003 ... Recent figures from tje ESA puts the avg age of gamers at 35 though, where only 1/4th is beneath the age of 18. In fact, girls between the age of 18-49 have more gamers then boys < 18...

These interviews from IGN did exactly what they were supposed to do, spark a discussion. And I think I just won

Doesn't it kind of depend who you count as a "gamer"? Do they mean PC gamers (who are relatively hard to find in real life) or console gamers (every other guy I know has a console - I've always had my PC)?

I'm a gamer, and I just played a game of flag football with my dorm-mates last night, am going out with a relatively hot chick on Monday (not entirely sure if it's a "date" or not but whatev. Weird circumstances.), and am the unofficial tech-support for my floor.

I've said it my entire life. Playing a computer game is just playing a board game on steroids, or reading a book (if the single player is good). Unless you count MMOs as actual games.

While I agree that the age old gamer stereotype doesn't hold up, I'd still say a fair bit of skepticism is in order on this "study." For instance: "the average gaming household income ($79,000) is notably higher than that of nongaming households ($54,000)" Household income is a bit misleading. It's not the gamer's individual earnings. Are gamers more likely to still be living with their parents thus skewing the household income data? I'm not sure where the causation is either. Are they suggesting gamers make more money, or does it take more money to become a gamer?

Do gamers sleep? Where do they get time to work full time (the average age is 32, well beyond college years), commute, go out on all these dates, play all these sports, spend "five more hours on the Internet, two more hours watching television and two more hours listening to music than nongamers" which already spend too many hours watching television etc. How much time is left over for the gaming?

I remember in early teens me, mother, and step-father used to play Civilization: Call To Power when it came out in Hotseat. That game almost broke apart our family... They actually almost got a divorce!

It starts out of course always - "Why don't you want to trade with me?", "Why did you build that wonder before I did, knowing that I was doing it?", and escalated to "You're a heartless, selfish bastard, I don't know why I married you".

Same thing happened with Monopoly. My mother is a little nuts..

Sounds like the mom of a friend of mine. She got fucking mad when we played Apples to Apples.

Can't imagine too many adults actually playing a real sport.

Define real sport - I'm an adult, and I play basketball and racquetball with my friends. And I'm a gamer. More rarely we'll play football or water polo

Why is it hard to imagine an adult playing sports? It's on TV all the time, the Olympics, etc.
