I keep an eye on hardware prices week to week on Ncix, and I can't help but notice that the prices seem to be increasing across the board, and pretty significantly. Is this happening everywhere? Is it going to continue? What's the deal?

Probably has something to do with the economy. Its getting harder for people and buisnesses to get loans. In the case of buisnesses they need to take out loans in order to buy there inventories. Generally they have to take out loans at about this time of year so they can get the large volue of inventory they need to support the upcoming Christmas holiday. So if they are not able to get the loans or they are unable to get as big of a loan as they would like they are forced to increase prices in order to secure the funding needed to get there inventories. Thats one theory anyway.

What "hardware" are you asking about?

I see prices falling. For instance you've never been able to get more GPU power for as little as you can now.
I've paid $200 for a 10GB HD, $258 for a 450MHz CPU... So "No", prices aren't rising.

After ordering components for a new system, I'd have to say they've fallen slightly or remained about the same. I last built a machine ~2003 (shortly after my join date here) and my new machine is roughly the same price (maybe a little lower) than the rig I built in '03. I'm getting a much better computer without being as far behind the bleeding edge. I realize that components get better but all things being equal, with my latest build I'm much closer to the forefront of the technology than I was with the '03 build (I never go for all latest & greatest parts..usually a step or two back from there).

OP checks "hardware prices week to week".

Is this a one week phenomenon (so far) or are the price increases continuing week by week?

Is this NCIX US, or .ca we're talking about? The loonie has been slipping against the dollar, so canandian hardware prices are on the rise. Overall cost of hardware is not, however.

It's called inflation. $4,000,000,000,000.00 in new cash creation by the fed.
You will never see the current prices again and if you think they're high now just wait a year.

Many years ago I paid $258 for a 450MHz CPU. Today that same $258 will buy a MUCH faster processor.
What's that called?

Probably the Canadian dollar thing as Virtual Larry mentioned, it was down to about $.80 against the US dollar. That is making Canadian hardware prices rise significantly.

Kinda sucks for buying games from Steam too, costing me about 20% more than a couple months ago due to the exchange rate.

world and asian markets are both down, even worse than in the USA. They are predicting the Dollar to be getting stronger. Dont have any idea exactly what that means for prices. It could cause shortages or something.

You mean you paid $258 for a high end processor then and now a high end processor will cost you $1000? It's called inflation.

Yeah, I do believe it is the Canadian dollar dropping, was just something I noticed on ncix (ca) over the last few weeks. Kinda sucks.
