Are Hybrids worth it?

Anyhow I am considering whether to buy a used small car (like a ford focus which is fairly cheap to buy) or possibly a new or maybe a used hybrid?

Other than being green. Does it make more fiscal sense?

I'm going to guess that buying a used econobox will be cheaper than buying a new or used hybrid, even in the long run. Money saved = money spent on gas.

Depends on mileage, how you drive, tax credits, etc...

The saturn Hybrids are cheaper and get "paid" off faster but get less mileage then the higher more costly hybrids. So Saturn it trying to get the in between market. Hybrid without the full price of a hybrid.

If you want to make fiscal sense get an old Honda Civic. Also some would argue it is more green than a new car since you are reusing something rather than buying something new.

A used Prius isn't really worth it. If you are good bargainer you can get a package #2 for $21000 brand new. I see used ones going for nearly that much. Plus a used one does not get you the $800 tax credit this year.

We are seriously contemplating a Prius mainly for the gadgets and gas mileage.

This is very true.

When considering a hybrid, do be sure to factor in the eventual cost of replacing the batteries.

I know two people with hybrids (a Toyota Prius and a Honda Civic hybrid), and neither of them has reported overwhelmingly great gas mileage with their driving habits.

Any used economy car is way more worth it if you're trying to save some green.

I have a Focus ZX3, and while it isn't anywhere near stock under the hood... I get about 30-35 city and 35-40 highway. And I paid about a quarter of what a hybrid new costs.

The two most important questions are how much do you drive daily, and what mix of city/highway.

Are you sure? That is really good gas mileage. If that is the case i am leaning towards the focus.

Not sure how he gets that either. Ford says the Focus with a 5 speed gets 27city and up to 37 highway. maybe if he drives in 5th gear at 50mph he might be able to get over 35range. But ford says 31 should be the average combined of city and highway.

Pretty much. More chemical energy in diesel fuel, and the engines are plenty more reliable than hybrid power plants. While the hybrids have more lower end torque, diesels still have them beat for total torque across the rev range.

Diesel = cheaper than gas + better fuel mileage = awesome - crappy environmental regulations = more awesome!

The hybrids seem to excel in certain conditions while the diesels seem to be better overall. Too bad diesel fuel (what, #2 for cars?) isn't anywhere near universally available. Some regions seem pretty good for having one diesel #2 pump every couple of gas stations, while other places just don't seem to have any.
