This is definitely their 9590 moment. 5 ghz or bust, damn the wattage, full binning ahead!
It looks different because we're watching them lose their lead, instead of a futile attempt at keeping up.

No doubt about it, this is definitely a desperation SKU. Even if they can't beat the 12C and 16C offerings, Intel at least wants to prevent a mid-range 8C Ryzen 3000 CPU from decimating their top mainstream desktop chip.

This is definitely a reaction but it steals a page from the AMD book by running the chips on the ragged edge from the factory. Still, I won't be surprised if these highly binned chips can offer an extra 200MHz - 300MHz overclocking headroom. My only concern here is power and thermals. Should be crazy, guaranteed.

I doubt it. AMD has been less than Intel like FOREVER, Even in 2006 before Conroe when they were the fastest, they were cheaper. Thats why I got them. Then after Conroe, I only get Intel. Now back to Ryzen/AMD.

I wouldn't put money on it......I mean I don't really know, but it WILL be hot and expensive and hard to cool. That I DO know.

Their response should have been equivalent design with Sonny Cove cores at 10nm. Unfortunatelly they got stuck YEARS back with pushing crazy stuff on their next gen nodes. Now they will have to play catchup for a year or two (if they are lucky). Luckily for intel they have tons of money they can bleed before sh*t becomes real/serious.

its gonna be close but given ryzen 3000 higher latency and lower clocks the general IPC isnt gonna suffice, or thats my bet anyway

I don't think AMD will be able to top this new chip in games. Maybe match it at best. But I do think the equivalent AMD chip will be close enough to be practically indistinguishable in most games and will do so at 70% the cost and probably less % TDP. Just a guess though, could be totally wrong.
