Are Intel P4 cases compatible with AMD CPU based motherboards/

Excuse the dumby question from a technology challenged old guy, who has been asleep for the last year as to developments in power supplies and cases.

I'm planning to build an AMD XP 2000 based motherboard system supporting two hard drives, a burner, a dvd-rom and maybe a floppy (call me sentimental). But all this case/power supply talk has me stumped as to whether or not the pentium 4 cases/powersupplies are compatible with an AMD XP-2000.

I did read the thread thru to as far as we can go back, and this question, I guess, is too fundamental for recent coverage.

Please advise.

Short Answer: Yes.

Long Answer: What you are probably stumped about was nomenclature on power supplies, being labeled as P4 or such. You can use the same power supply for both AMD and intel mobo's, but some P4 mobo's require an extra (12V?) connector from the power supply. I believe the p4 mobo standard calls for it (although some companies have designed their mobo's in a way that apparently doesnt require the connector).

So if you are going the P4 route, its best to get a power supply labeled as p4-ready, because it will have the connector you will likely need. If you end up going the AMD route, you can still use that same power supply, just disregard the extra connector.


There is no difference in cases for AMD/Intel. Cases are an entirely different standard. Hope this helps!

some AMD mobo need that same 12V power connector too so it's always a good idea to get the power supply that has both.

Which ones? I've never seen AMD mobos use the P4-extra-power-plug which is 12v btw
