subaru STI/WRX.
Too small; can't really take one of those on a family trip when I'm used to something larger. I looked at the legacy but the 6 cylinder has no manual. The 2.5GT does but it's not terribly fast in a straight line.

i don't even need AWD. Damnit, nissan why did you do that? I want a manual 2009 maxima.
Maybe I can ask a certain member here to assist with swapping its tranny

If you don't need AWD, you could always get the manual G37?

Germany still makes them but Audi, BMW, all to rich for my blood.

G35/7 would be on the short list but I am reading some horrific things about them in the snow even with snow tires. I don't know if I could risk it. I'd feel bad getting a call from Mrsskoorb for wrapping it around a tree or unable to get up a 2 degree rise on the way to work because I insisted we had a RWD car.

Acura makes the TL AWD all pimped out but it's crazy expensive. I guess there are in fact options I'm just too cheap. Really just supporting the premise of this thread, which I still agree with.

You're just going to have to go with the Legacy...I think that's your best bet. It should be close to the performance as your Max...what am I thinking...nothing can beat the VQ...am I right?

Are you seriously thinking about replacing soon...or is this the beginning of a 2 year mulling?

I think manuals will live on not just because of the nostalgia, but because they are easy to maintain and cost less to repair. I believe old school automatics will fall and CVT / DSG will remain.

One never knows with me, including me. Sadly, or maybe not sadly, the maxima's value is falling very low. I could only get $4k for it now and yet to me it is worth much more than that, not nostalgicly, but practically.

Sooner rather than later (meaningless term but you get my point) I need to replace my maxima. Unfortunately Nissan doesn't sell a manual maxima anymore. So what else? Let's look at Mazda 6. Oh wait, they don't either (unless I want the 4 cylinder). It certainly is getting hard to get a manual transmission and, worse for me, the higher performance packages of various cars (e.g. G35/7x, Buick Lacrosse, etc.) with AWD especially don't exist in a manual variant.

If you want something with decent power and AWD and manual your options are seriously curtailed.

wouldnt you just get an altima?

the new maxima's are pretty huge and are made to compete with the avalon now from toyota or things like the taurus which are larger cars.

if your maxima is well more than 3 years old or so you probably have one of the older ones in which case the altima is the new maxima.

they are actually based on the same platform, just the new larger maxima has a larger version of it.

EDIT:

apparently you cant get the altima even in manual for 2010 models yet. and if you get a 2009 its only the i-4 that can have manual. I guess you should just get an accord... they still offer it on the i-4, and that engine has 190 hp so its not god awful. too bad honda isn't putting manuals on v6 sedans like they did the last generation, not enough demand so its only on the coupe.

i think for the most part manual is more or less dead in this country if you live anywhere near a city. I grew up in los angeles, and almost no one i knew even had a manual and it was hard enough to buy some cars in the manual version. i drive an automatic and my experience with manual has been all of maybe 2 hours in my friends old ford escort. I mean it was not that hard, but why bother? I mean for commuting I could care less and even with most say recreational driving most automatics are supposed to be very good unless you really are some track day guy which probably less than 1% of people are. I do want to someday buy a manual track toy type thing as a 2nd car, but really that what it boils down to now is that i wouldn't care enough unless it was a 2nd car for "fun" and in stop and go traffic i'd imagine it would be horrible. companies wont even build manuals unless you order the car in some areas now because teh demand is just so low and they end up rotting on the lots especially for nicer cars. plus a lot of the new autos are better even the normal torque converter ones. i know car and drivers's 370z automatic test was actually faster to 60 and the auto got better gas milage. and with DSG starting to appear on even normal cars (like say the fiesta when it comes out) theres basicall no penalty for it anymore.

on top of that you cannot build a hybrid (i hate the hybrids out now but im sure they will be more and more common place soon) that can run on battery power alone (such as the new fusion , camry, prius, but not the honda ones) with a manual.

hans007 I actually do like the Altima Coupe. It looks very nice, more like a Max to me than a banal four-door Altima. I said I'd never own another two-door car but it's been years now so perhaps I would and the current gen Altima Coupes with V6 do come with a 6 speed.

At some point we'll all have autos (CVT) and the technology really is there. The main argument for a manual is just some subjective funness factor. I really do still like it.

Yeah but the Altima Coupe is pretty expensive. While it starts at about the same price as the 4 door, it seems like dealers are only ordering the fully decked out versions. I like the car's looks but I'm not going to pay $30K for one.

the altima coupe really is pretty nice looking.

if you consider just 2+2 coupes in the nissan stable a lot of people say it sort of looks like a G35 coupe (the new G37 looks sort of weird and bloated so not so much ). I do agree that the altima coupe can look really nice, the higher optioned onse with larger wheels seem to be a lot better looking.

then again if you are open to coupes, i think there are better choices in that price range of a v6 altima coupe with nicer rims... if you can do rwd the new mustang v6 or the genesis costs comparable to an altima coupe v6 manual (the manual only comes on the decked out edition which i think is what searchmaster was talking about. you cant get the manual with cloth seats, but you can easily get say a mustang or genesis with less equipment.

My last car was a 2006 Honda Civic with a manual and I used cruise all the time. On the highway, in the city, everywhere.

I had an automatic 06 Civic LX, and the cruise control was one of the best I've ever used. I've never used the cruise on my manual GLi...something about it being manual kinda scares me...lol

I may give you a hard time about it...but that really was a fantastic car relative to what was out during that time period. The choices in that range are not nearly as fun these days (noted in this thread how none offer a manual with any decent engine choice).

I know I'm going to sound crazy...but Buick is planning on coming out with the regal in a manual hooked to the 2.0L turbo...that may be something to look at. The Insignia (the same car...actually going to be manuf. at the same plant in Germany at first) is a great car for what it is.

+1. Don't engage cruise unless you are not planning to adjust speeds more than a little +/-. That really applies to both MTs or ATs, nothing new here.

I would consider a Buick though I doubt mrsskoorb would stand for it

Yeah...I would have the same issue. I've been showing my wife pictures of the Buick...and all she says is that her Mom drives a Buick and to her that is the end of the conversation.

Shocker. Ford Fusion 6 cylinder is autotragic only.

Yeah it's a non-starter. I mean I suppose I could get it done but I'd have to really believe in it, too.

Are there really so few people who want to cart their kids around to school in a powerful manual? I guess so!

I'm gonna use this thread for my rant instead of making another

Ford geared the 5sp in I4 Fusions like idiots. 3400rpm/3000rpm at 80/70? When 2700rpm would be plenty for 80mph? They're killing my gas mileage.

Needs a 6th gear. Glad the 2010 mans are 6sp

My 2006 Civic ran at about 3000rpm in fifth gear (manual) at 70mph and it got about 40mpg on the highway. Fuckin loved that car.

To put that into perspective, the piece of shit Prius that sacrifices absolutely everything to get the best gas mileage gets 48mpg.

I always thought my max ran high on the highway, too. It's well over 3k at normal cruising speed. At 2k around the city, though, it's still got ample torque so I frequently drive in 5th at moderate speeds.
