Are Maxtor S**T ????

OK so my Maxtor HD is pretty-dead going to RMA it should i push the retailer to refund so i can go with another make i.e. seagate ???

I have little PC experience and dont know whats best in the HD 200gig budget market and i am obviously bit wary of getting another Maxtor...

Any ideas????

I have had many maxtor and WD drives fail on me, the most reliable brand IMO is Seagate.

I've owned quite a few drives from just about every manufacturer, and the only brand I've had any trouble with was Western Digital. Everyone is different, so I wouldn't put too much consideration into each person's individual experience. Get whatever drive you can that has at least a 3-year warranty and you should be good.

I don't trust Maxtors lately. Seen a lot of failures. Let's be honest, how much faith can you have in a HDD manufacturer who's only willing to warranty their drives for 1 year?

I prefer Seagate lately for their 3 year warranty.

Everyone is different, so I wouldn't put too much consideration into each person's individual experience. Get whatever drive you can that has at least a 3-year warranty and you should be good.

Ditto. Every manufacturer will be similair in reliability. So, I see no reason for that to be what you base your purshase on. Base it on price, size, performance, noise level, warranty etc.

Maxtors might have higher than normal problems with the diamondmax9. Model 10 could be better.

And every major manufacturer has 3 yr warranties not 1 yr and Seagate has 5 yr warranty not 3.

Samsung is the only manufacturer who stuck with their standard 3yr warranty throughout the 3yr->1yr->3yr nonsense. They are the most reliable drives imo.

They are complete junk... All the Maxtors left in the building are failing off and being replaced with Seagates.

I have never ever seen such unreliable hardware in my life.. They easily take the cake for biggest junk ever.

I wouldn't trust a Maxtor HD with a single byte of my data, ever again!!!!

If you decide to get a dif hdd. Go with a Samsung or a Seagate. Best drives imo.

I find it peculiar how certain people have had an abnormal amount of the same hardware fail on them.

As for me, I have an Atlas 15K II (which is under constant BitTorrent stress) and 2x DM Plus 9's working fine (and with 3 year warranties). The only time I lost data is when the Raid controller failed. I have also never had an HDD fail on me either... from multiple Seagates to several WD BB/JB's to the notorious IBM series.

I've had many Maxtor's in the past, never had a problem with any of them. I just added a 300gb SATA Maxtor drive, and so far so good again.

And it has a 3year warranty, not a 1year. (Though I do think their retail boxed drives only have 1 year, but OEM are 3 year (unless this has all changed again))

The Atlas 10K and 15K scsi line are apparently good, but my old Maxtor IDE drives have all failed... none before the warranty ran out tho.

Another vote for Seagate as the most reliable.

I've had a few Maxtors die for clients we support - especially those external USB models. I think we had 3 of 4 fail. Slapped a Seagate with a 5 year warranty in place of the dead Maxtor and all was good.

Seriously though, I've got a 300GB Maxtor in a system without any issues so far so maybe the newer Maxtors are better? Either way, in the future I'll be getting Seagate just for the 5 year warranty. Can't beat that.

What good will a 5 year warranty do for you if you can't recover the data?

Nowadays, I tell people "It's not IF a HD will die on you, but WHEN." A good idea is to keep your data backed up on some form of static storage. I prefer DVD RW's. Another good idea is to make an image of your HD that can be restored via a bootable recovery CD. Acronis is your friend when it comes to this.

That said, get the HD with the longest warranty, and be prepared to restore it for when it does go out and a replacement comes in.

Just had my 80gb Maxtor that was a little over a year old start failing. It farted and lost the fat table for my d partition, grrr. Luckily I was able to get to many of the files using a good ol' Windows 98 bootdisk(cuz I still use Fat32). Windows of course just told me it was an unformatted disk, "Would you like to format it?! Hell no! Where's mah bootdisk!?!? Backing up is for suckers! Hehe, more fun scrambling around trying to recover your files. /sarcasm

Anways yeah, I read all the account of people have Maxtor problems, but I figured I'd find out for myself(plus it was a good deal). So for the record, they were right!

Ok I had a maxtor 1.2 gig die on me after 8 months... I got it RMAd & paid for a 1.6 gig. 6 months later that one died too. I got THAT one RMAd and, fed up, sold it. The guy I sold it to told me it died on him 10 months later.

My advice: drop maxtor. go seagate.

ive owned hdd's from all the major brands. i have never had one die on me. of course i only use it for 5 years at the most. right now i have a maxtor drive. no issues.

Seeing as they are exactly the same price (less now than what i paid...) for budget 200gig models i may get way with it

Next to the old IBM Deathstars of a few years back Maxtor drives are the most hated drive on the planet. BUT.... I've had far more problems with Seagate than Maxtors. I have used maybe a dozen or more Maxtors over the past few years and only had to replace one due to a failure, but it was one that I used in several machines as a test drive and got slapped around like Michael Jackson in a biker bar.

I have no complaints at all against Maxtor drives but I will say that Samsumg is really hard to beat for quality and low noise. The warranty is all part of marketing and has very little to do with quality. People like a 3 or 5 year warranty because it suggests quality, but in reality the manufacturers just replace the dead drives with refurb'd units and I don't know many people who like paying for a retail drive only to put their valuable data on a refurb a year later. I had to RMA my last Seagate and when I got my refurb I quickly sold it and got a new Samsung. I have also purchased a Maxtor 200g since then but only because it was cheap. It's been fine but I can hear the head from across the room.

specifically for me, DM8, but I've had 9's fail, and older DiamondMax 60's and D740's too.
Although the DM8's are MUCH worse for reliability.. their failure rate is like 75% for me at least.

Ok. I was interested to know if the D10s are more reliable.
I have a old D540 which is still running strong. No active cooling on it from day 1 and it gets a little hot to the touch.

In my experience, Maxtor is low quality. But the worse HDD brand ever is fujitsu.

I've had good luck with WD and Seagate...

However I do have like a 5 year old 40GB maxtor in my server...
