Are Millenials the unluckiest generation in U.S. history?

Looking for opinions from all but especially Millenials. According to this opinion paper in the Washington Post ... it will be tough going for your generation. Lucky for you, you (hopefully) will get a nice inheritance from your parents ...

My parents' generation-kids during the Great Depression, WWII enlistment at approximately age 18-then island hopping in the Pacific or D-Day-hedgerows fighting-Battle of the Bulge, etc. Or my friends's parents that were survivors of concentration camps.

my generation-dratted to Vietnam while Nixon stalled peace talks for 18 months arguing over shape of peace talk tables, then stagflation-costs escalate, income goes nowhere, employment rates miserable.

Millennials aren't even in contention.

I'd agree -- millennials definitely got the short end of the stick compared to the previous generation, but even the combo of a pandemic, Trump and economic unfairness (having to go deep into debt just to get a decent job) is mild in comparison what some generations went through.

On that note: it's still strange to me to imagine a time when you could be drafted into a war, or when genocide took place on a massive scale (sadly, it's taken place during my lifetime). Hopefully those don't happen again, or at least not for a very long time.

i have a feeling that by 2050 we'll end up with much of the world feeling reminiscent of the reign of commodus

What about the generation that grew up during the Great Depression? Or any generation pre-child labor laws? Come on, they certainly have it worse than boomers but hardly the worst.

Most Millenials I know who are doing well in life, family and career managed to avoid liberal indoctrination by college, parents or media. Life is better and harder for some people, depending on how they have been taught to manage in life. I also know a lot of totally pussified Millenials too. The difference in their lives is astounding. Some own homes and are well entrenched in careers, have families, ect., while others of same age have not accomplished one damn thing and are still living at home. So, no I don't believe just because one is of a particular generation that they are worse off.

Worse than boomers no question. Sadly I think Zoomers will have it even worse than we did. They're graduating into what will be an even worse economy than the one we graduated into, all the while college is even costlier than ours already was and housing is more expensive too.

Given that you soil yourself if you encounter anyone who isn't a fellow Trump drone, your anecdotal observation doesn't really mean much. Living in a hyper-conservative bubble like you do means you seldom see the many successful liberal people.

And it is in fact possible to embrace liberal concepts like basic human empathy and evidence-based reasoning while still being successful, you know. You don't have to be a heartless cog in the machine.

I haven't read the article yet (and honestly probably won't because I don't really care about arguments about generations), but I think there's an argument to be made about future issues, like climate change. Those alone could dwarf anything any previous human generation dealt with. Millennials will be the ones in the driver seat when those issues start to hit. Well unless younger generations get really politically active.

This guy gets it.

Isn't that kinda the point though, that you don't have a choice of when you grew up, and so you could grow up during time when policy is deliberately being done to harm you and you'd have little to no ability to do anything about it.

No, Milllenials are fine. Just need to grow a set, start voting and purge the country of the organized criminal organization known as the Republican party.

Ah yes, one half of the "liberals is bad!" talking points you've been trained to repeat because your thought leaders have had a direct line to shit into your skull your entire adult life.

The other half, of course, is the "liberal elites" who have lots of money and don't really stand with their fellow working class liberals.

Liberal working class people are poor and live in their basements! Liberal elites have too much money and don't care about their fellow liberals!

Yes, we get it, collaborator. Libruuls bad! Right-wing authoritarians good!

Go back to your boogaloo fantasies.

Luck implies chance. Policy decisions were and are made with knowable likely outcomes.

It's largely been without their participation however. When it comes down to actions of others, it's the equivalent of luck. That is to say, prior generations could have elected better leaders, or not.

That said, now that they can all vote, they are starting to bear some responsibility with their low voter turnouts. If they have poor turnouts again in November, they can watch their prospects for the future slip even farther down the crapper.

And yes, they are - they'll be among the first generation to will have to deal with the fact that other generations of their countrymen are working hard to burn it all down.

Bingo.

It's not that one "generation" of Americans has it harder than others.

It's that the people in charge RIGHT NOW are trying to finish burning down society for as much profit as possible for themselves and their own families. Which will ultimately make it that much harder for x'ers/millenials/z'ers to "get ahead".

US Conservatives are sooo close that they're pulling all the stops that they can, because their warped, immoral worldview is going to die with them, and they want to finish leeching as much as they can, while they can. The rubes who vote for em...they're just reprogrammable meatbags and do what they're told because they're good authoritarians. They don't think about things, they repeat what they've been told to repeat. Which is why trying to have a rational conversation with them is like trying to unscramble an egg.

Selfishness and malice are not the equivalent of luck.

Selfishness and malice are not the equivalent of luck.

If you're person A, and person B's behavior is out of your control, then the result of person B's behavior is luck from your perspective. Or it's functionally the same as luck.

When you go thru the great depression, waiting in line for bread and are fighting a world war get back to me.
Or, when you're fighting a civil war, being drafted into Vietnam, or you're living thru the black plague get back to me.

Are you kidding me? Hoe did you post this question? My guess. On a laptop. Or, even better a smartphone while you're eating a bag of Cheetos, drinking Mt. Dew and watching Netflix. We don't even know what difficulty is. we have it very easy. It's also up to you to make changes in your life. No one is going to do it for you, and frankly no one gives a f*k. True story.
