Are motherboards that have the same SPS# interchangeable?

I need to replace my failing motherboard from my Pavilion dv7-1130us. I did a search for my motherboard's SPS#: 486542-001. There were many, and it seems this number is found on many in this series, such as the dv7-1128a. But when I looked at a dv7-1128a, I noticed it uses an Intel processor rather than an AMD that is in my laptop. There are many numbers to the right of the SPS# on another label. I assume some of those numbers denote compatibility and/or revisions. Does anyone know what numbers are considered significant and which ones may only signify a new or later revision?

Here are my numbers found on the white sticker under my laptop's RAM.

HP often manufactures a number of related models under both the HP and Compaq name using the same motherboard with different features enabled. A different model using same board would have different BIOS identifying it as the original machine from which it came, and it may have more or fewer external connectors which may not align with the openings on your case.

Your machine is old enough that it originally came with Vista 64 bit. You can buy a decent new laptop with about equivalent specs for $300 - $400 so it may not be worth the price of a replacement board or for a skilled technical service to repair the problem.

Assuming the motherboard isn't physically broken (cracked traces, broken connectors, etc.), it may be worth it if a good repair tech gives you an estimate of $100 or less to repair the machine. Otherwise, recycle it, or sell it for what you can get for it for the parts.

Good luck.

One of the things I love about HP is they don't restrict/hide their service manuals which includes all the spare part numbers.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01918142

Page 20/21 shows 4 system board options for the dv7.

RX781 Northbridge with ATI HD3450: 486541-001
M780G Northbridge with UMA: 486542-001
PM45 Northbridge with nVidia NB9P-GS: 480365-001
PM45 Northbridge with nVidia NB9M-GE: 480366-001

So, that part number you have is correct and is specific to that motherboard.
