Are my friend's parents insane?

So me and my friend went out to get something to eat after school. Nothing strange there right? Apparently, his mom found a receipt of the place we went to eat at and she started to question him. It was like an inquisition from what he described and when his parents found out, they took away his car. So now they drive him to school instead of him usually driving himself to school. I think he said his parents don't like him spending a lot of money or something like that.
So apparently going by what he told me, his parents basically tries to keep him on a lease. They don't really let him hang out with friends or anyone outside of school for that matter.

When I was walking with him to the parking lot, he even told me to not let his dad see me. I was like WTF... Who does that? His Dad haven't even met me before.

He is 20 years old so I am going WTF when he told me what happened. His parents basically grounded him, and I was like.. Who the heck gets grounded at 20 years old.

I think these kind of parents are crazy. What do you guys think?

For anyone inquiring about race, he is Asian.

tell him to move out then

according to at standards, he's a loser already still living at home at 20. he should have moved out, gone to college, and making his 1st million by 16 anyway.

Just because someone is still living at home at the age of 20 doesn't mean he/she is a "loser". One of my other friend lived at his mom's apartment till he was 30, and he was an engineer and have his masters. Living home with parents is a great way to save up for a mortgage so one doesn't have to waste money on rent and stuff. He moved out and is married now.

It is a great way to save money in this economy.

If you're going to live with your parents, you're going to get treated like a child no matter what your age is.

Honestly, I think that one should adhere to their parent's rules when they are living in their household.

However, I also think some rules should be reasonable at least.

When you own your own house and have your own kids, remember this.

Keyword is "kids"

Dude is practically an adult.

Then move out, otherwise...deal with it. He's legally an adult anyways, may as well act like it. From the sounds of it, they treat him like that because he allows it.

Sounds like your friend needs to get a job, and move out of the house. :hmm:

not really, I lived with my parents during my time in the danish army and about a year after that until I found an apartment in the city where I study (apartment market fucking sucks here). I was free to do whatever I wanted, the only way my parents would really know what I was up to was by offering to be a free taxi service (also gave them peace of mind so it was win-win).

Because it is so easy to "move out"

Rent around my city is about $1,000 for a pretty small apartment.

What exactly are you searching for here? Sympathy? Concession? Agreement?

Yea, his parents are controlling. If it's bad enough where he leaves, then he'll go where he can. Your city is not the only place on earth.

Did you ever think that maybe his parents monetary situation is a little tight, and the don't appreciate their son spending money on that they might not have?

They are middle class. Almost all his siblings went to a UC for medical degrees like dentist and pharmacy. He also said his dad was a dentist or something like. Somewhere in the medical field.

Even if they are tight on cash, they shouldn't be THAT overprotective. The dude spent like $20 on food (I spotted him $5 because he didn't clarify with the chef how much he was going to be charged. (I also think he was cheated too.) and they are acting like he committed a horrendous act or something.

or still acts like a kid. I treat everyone based on their behavior, act like a kid and I'd treat them like one. I know plenty of adults who still act like angry teens at times.
