Now that the 1.6A is not being produced anymore and prices are going threw the roof..are the P4 1.8a O/Cing better..ie hitting 150 fsb consistently???

There's no guarantee. My 2 1.8a's won't overclock over 10% even at 1.75-1.8 volts. I think the 1.6a and 2.26 are the best cpus for overclocking.

hmmmm.....i thought there is a certain limit to how high you can o/c your CPU.
if you have a 1.6G, if you can o/c 50%, you can get to 2.4G.
if you have a 1.8G, if you can o/c 50%, you can get to 2.7G???

the higher you base cpu speed, the higher you can o/c to ???

no?

Actually, it is about a 3-3.1Ghz ceiling for the processor. The limit is based on the chip itself, but the 1.6/1.8/2.26 with multipliers of 16X/18X/17X repectively will have the greater success.

I've got my 1.8A @ 2808 running Prime95 stable, using 1.675v and 1:1 mem ratio (I have crap memory).

It seems that the most of the freshly packaged 1.8As overclocks very, very well.
Mine was packaged on 06/10/02, and it hits 2.52 (140 fsb) at default voltage...
It can go higher most likely but I do have a PC 2100 memory for now...

nealh : I'm running with a P4B533-V.

Mikki : Thanks, just need some nice Corsair XMS now so that I can run the memory at a higher ratio!

My 1.8a goes to 2.52 at default voltage as well. However, I am using 1-GB of Samsung 2700 memory.

This weekend I am going to see how much faster I can push the system.

I had a 1.6a @ 2.351 1.7V on the Asus P4B266 retail board. Sold it and awaiting arrival of 1.8a on Abit TH7II-RAID. Will post results of success later this week.

I have a P4 1.8A running at 2844 with 1.85 volts (158FSBX18)
MSI 6547 SIS645DX
2700DDR
Watercooled (32 degrees Celcius ambient.) 39 Celcius under load

Just got my Corsair XMS3200C2 v2.1 DDR400
And going to order a SIS648 for now - 648(DX?) when they come out Novemberish.
I'll post when I have those results... I am shooting for 3Ghz maybe...

I feel its mainly the motherboard, HeatSink, and memory used thats holding most back!

My chip is odd then if its only the new pack dates that are clocking that high....
It's a 1-14-02 which Ive run for 1 week @ 2.1, 2 months @ 2.6, and tested at 2.8 and 2.9...
As for voltage the stock number got me up to 2.6 then i started up'ing it a little. Temps have
been great with this Alpha HS. I did notice the new 1.8A's listed in intel info have a higher
Temp rating?

But I have seen people say 2.2 is all they can get 1st few pack dates or not... I know two other
people I helped build 1.8A systems for and they clock at 2.5 and 2.8 they both run different mobos,
Ram, and HS along with other items. I see it as a hit and miss kinda thing.

My 1.8a is running at 2.52, 140fsb, with vcore of 1.525. But the bios reports it at 1.6 and the same with asus probe. My 1.6a is at 2.12, 132fsb.

OC.com has a P4 1.8A shootout.

http://www.overclockers.com/articles616/

All tests were done with the stock Intel HSF. 3 different mobo combinations were used.

Here are the testing setups:

CPU 3 * P4 1.8A
Motherboard ABIT SA-7 (SIS 645DX) , ABIT BD7II ( Intel 845E ) Gigabyte IGX (Intel 845G)
Memory Kingston PC 2100 256MB DDRAM
HSF Stock Intel HSF (Only one HSF is used through out the test)
VGA Card Leadtek Geforce 2-MX
OS WIN XP
Stability Test Prime95 & 3Dmark 2001

3 different P4 1.8A steppings were used:

Production Code : SL63X
FPO/Batch : L208A955 (week 8)
Pack Date : 06/04/2002
Nationality : Malaysia

Production Code : SL68Q
FPO/Batch : 3219A012 (week ?)
Pack Date : 05/30/2002
Nationality : Costa Rica

Production Code : SL68Q
FPO/Batch : L222A573 (week 22)
Pack Date : 07/09/2002
Nationality : Malaysia

All 3 CPUs could do 2.4GHz at 1.5V (default Vcore). The SL68Q Costa Rica P4 couldn't do 2.5GHz at 1.5V, however, and was eliminated from the race. (What? Just because it can't do 2.5GHz at 1.5V? Bit harsh I reckon, but oh well, thats life little 1.8A )

This left the SL68Q Malay and SL63X Malay to battle it out. Both 1.8As couldn't reach stability at 2.7GHz at 1.65V on either the Abit SA-7 or the Gigabyte IGX, but was stable on the Abit BD7-II.

As the BD7-II turned out to be the most stable board for overclocking, it was the only board used in the remaining tests, to find the limit of the 1.8As using a relatively safe Vcore of 1.725V.

The SL68Q Malay 1.8A couldn't reach 2.79GHz stable at 1.725V, but the SL63X Malay 1.8A could. Further attempts at 2.88GHz resulted in hanging at POST. Temeperatures were also getting pretty high with the stock HSF, around 70 degrees, so using a better 3rd party HSF would probably have increased the overclock a bit, maybe even near 3GHz.

My thoughts?
Whether you love em or hate em, you can't deny Intel has produced one fine overclocking chip in the 1.8A. I was surprised at the overclockability of these chips, as I previously thought most topped out at around 2.5 - 2.6GHz.

Many people were disappointed in the discontiuation of the 1.6A, but with overclocking results such as this, with the stock cooler, it looks like the 1.8A is taking over the role of its little brother very nicely.

One part of his review bugged me to no end what gives with the memory he picked.....
I understand he is in Singapore but PC2100 maybe higher rated DDR isnt in ready supply?
Anyway I have yet to see anyone get above the OC #'s he posted for any 1.6A or 1.8A using PC2100...
Then my next concern was the word "Stock" next to HSF ???? keeping them cool could help....

In that test he got exactly what he was going to get poor results!

Yeah, really. Who in their right mind uses PC2100 when trying to test the limits ofa chip's OC'ability?! I wonder what he could have done with some good Corsair XMS PC3200C2
