Are people in New York as rude as they're made out to be in movies?

I guess the biggest thing you see (in movies) are people yelling at others saying "HEY, SHUT UP WILL YOU I'M TRYING TO SLEEP!", etc...

I visited for a week from NC, and I guess having a southern accent helped but every single NYC'er I asked for help (Subways stops, roads, directions, places to eat, etc.) was extremely nice and helpful.

They knew by my accent I was a visitor, and of course I asked kindly, but everyone was cool. Started all kindsa great conversations on the subways...I had no problems at all w/ NYC'ers. The only annoying ones were the ones at Yankee Stadium.

depends on where you go. If you mean NYC, then somewhat, but most of upstate people are normal folks.

If you're in Manhattan you probably won't have as much trouble. All the poor white people have moved out to Brooklyn/The Bronx/Queens. The more affluent white people along with the poorer hispanics and blacks in Manhattan tend to be perfectly polite, in my experience. But yeah, all the joisies in the other burroughs are obnoxious $#!@bags.

native new yorkers are usually in a hurry but the nicest hearted ppl you could meet. there are a lot of transplants that are total dickheads though.

I'm a NYer and don't find myself to be rude. I also find NYers in general to be the most civilized people in the states. NYer meaning people that live in Manhattan.

Personally I love NYC. I love the buildings, the people, the hustle and bustle, I love just walking around town looking at stuff, especially around Times Square and the busier places.

I get out a lot. I hardly see how this is related to my question though. Just about every tv show or movie portrays people in NY as being obnoxious and rude. I've never been to NY so I am curious to know why they get this stereotype.

Ok true that we're nowhere near as laid back as you guys outside the city but we find it to be the norm and absolutely can't stand it when things don't get done as *snappy as we're used to so we get kind of irritated at you slower people. I get totally pissed off when some relatives from Rhode Island gets all tired from walking 3 little blocks and end up needing an HOUR rest or having to hail a cab for a measily little 10 min walk telling me it's too far for walking. They also walk half the speed I do. Gahhh!
