a teacher of mine lived in new york most of her life, and was absolutely amazed at how polite and friendly people were when she moved to the milwaukee area.

the movies pretty much has captured the essence that is NY. When we're out in public we prefer not to be bothered by tourists like you. If you must stop and bother to ask a New Yorker a question then be prepared to get your pockets picked ... by the same person you asked. that's a fact.

asians are the most impolite new yorkers, but you can't really get mad at someone fresh off the boat can you. asians are funny like that.

the thing is... new york is a working city.

slow-moving tourists generally get in our way when we're trying to run an errand on our lunch break or make it to the other end of the city for a meeting, so of course we can sometimes be rude to them. but, like when driving, keep with the flow of traffic and you shouldn't have much problem getting yelled at on the street.

New Yorkers have slated eyes, are rude, and only last 2 minutes when doing the sex.

It's probably not as bad as they make it out to be in the movies, but it's far from the most polite place you can visit.

If you are blocking the subway door with your luggage during rush hour, the normally civilized people may become rude. If you catch that same person on a weekend and ask him for directions, he's probably more willing to help. New Yorkers also don't say make eye contact, greet or make idle banter with strangers. And if someone bumps into you, check your pockets to see if you've been robbed; don't expect a "sorry". And I wouldn't trust the guy selling watches on the street to help me take a picture.

halik - It is rude to put a wet umbrella on a subway seat. Especially in a crowded car. So I can understand if an old man wanted to sit down. It'll probably be illegal too in a few months. On the bright side of NY'ers, they will usually give up their seat to the elderly.

erwin1978 - I don't think the Asians are most impolite. I find the ghetto types to be much more rude (yelling, cussing, etc.) The impolite Asians don't seem to realize what they're doing is impolite. But it's true, many asians (recently from asia) will fail to give up his seat. In fact, he'll make a mad dash from 5 yards away to get a seat while someone 2 feet away waits patiently for a person to get up.

If they gave the United States an enema, they would stick the hose in New Jersey.

North Jersey is a total dump, but the rest of NJ can be pretty nice.

you call bergen county a dump?

Bergen county as in Lyndhurst, Hackensack, Garfield, Lodi, Moonachie, Paramus, T-Boro, Cliffside Park.... and all those surrounding towns... it is a dump and getting worse very quickly. I lived in this area as a teen and it was pretty decent. I came back 5yrs ago and am horrified at the changes from when I left until I got back.. and even worse in the last five years. But I suppose parts of Bergen county dont suck.

And at least it is not as bad as many parts of Hudson County.

Having moved to San Francisco six months ago, I can tell you that it's not just NYC. (And, for that matter, here's a disclaimer regarding stereotyping people by region.)

Specifically, people are gonna be jerks between 5-7PM on weekdays on public transit. They'll be curt in the mornings, too, but will probably be too impatient to spend any time poking fun at you. I've noticed that in S.F., though, you can ask peoples' opinions (esp. useful when trying the new Ethiopian restaurant down the street) and they'll tell you. While I was in NY, I think I got angry or confused glares when I asked people, "Hey. What're you eating? It looks fantastic."

That's the problem. You're from South Jersey.

I'm closer to Philadelphia. MUCH nicer crowd. MUCH nicer.

I think I've heard of it (Philadelphia) in the movies once.

Philly's a dirty city. People are nice, but let me tell you, they are FAT. People in NY at least walk around all day, people in Philly eat Philly Cheesesteaks all day.

I bet if you ranked Philly with the rest of the nation, they'd be near the top in fatness.

They're called cheesesteaks, not 'Philly Cheesesteaks'. Thank you very much.

I was visiting my friend in San Jose a few years ago and we went out to get lunch. I ordered a "cheesesteak", and what I got looked like a little sirloin on a bun with cheese on it.

So there are "cheesesteaks" all over the place, but only in Philly is a cheesesteak a "Philly Cheesesteak".

I also asked for a hoagie and people just looked at me and tried to pronounce it. Who doesn't know what a hoagie is?

I know, it's a regional thing, but if you order a 'Philly Cheesesteak' in Philadelphia or its surroundings, you'll get stared at.

Same with hoagie. Sub, zep, hero, grinder, torpedo... all the same damn thing.

P.S. - They all try to copy ours, but they always fail
