I see so many car stickers around here of people who went to this or that community college or a real low tier school. I can understand if you went to Harvard or MIT (though it is a bit vain) and put it on your car but isn't kind of silly to advertise to the world that went to some cheesy local community college? Are these people really that proud?

I like Adam Corrolla's view on community colleges. The other night on LoveLine he was suggesting that they take high school kids there to scare them straight. "This will be you if you don't get your sh!t together before you graduate!" hahaha....

yes actually.. they probably are. chances are the parent didnt go to college, and wanted to make sure that their kid made it, and didnt fall to drug problems, crime, whatever.

Not everyone can go to Harvard. Why shouldn't someone be proud of their accomplisments, no matter what they are?

Yes they are. And they should be too. There is no difference between a good community college and Harvard or MIT. You take the same courses. You use the same books. You cover the same material, do the same work. And guess what you learn the same amount of stuff. But one way cost you $1000 for two years and the other cost you $50000. And for the majority of jobs, the place you got your education won't make any difference. I'll let you think about that and say who should be more proud.

I guess it's better than having a bumper sticker that says "My kid is a worthless piece of crap that finished high school, didn't go on to college, flips burgers for a living, and sleeps in my basement".

Maybe things are different here... A college being local to you doesn't have anything to do with the caliber of school it is. My community college is one of the best in Ontario. I'd sure as hell never go there, but anyway..

edit: funny @ vi_edit.

Would you rather see bumper stickers that say they are proud that their child works the milk shake machine at McDonalds?

Hmmm? So let me get this right Doggiedog, you basically mean that 'you' would be embarrased to make a public statement to the world that you are trying to 'better' yourself and use your brain in a productive matter?

Or did I just mis-interpret your post?

Why not be proud of what your child is doing, as long as it is admirable. A community college is a great place for people to go that do not know what they want to get into. Why spend more money on a larger school to get an associate's when you can spend less and have that time to decide what you want to do with it?

And there are no problems with not going to college. Some of us can find jobs without a degree

No, I am wondering why people around here have stickers 3 levels high covering their rear windshields advertising they went to xxxx community college, Apex Tech, etc. etc. Are they that proud of their achievements?

Now Doggiedog, I think I speak for a few people here when I ask: Are you questioning if those people are proud of their academic 'achievements', or are you sarcasticaly (sp?) making a statement hinting towards the quality and level of education that community colleges provide?

I went to a pretty good community college. I don't have a sticker on my car or anything like that, but I enjoyed my time there and liked it for the most part. It costs a lot less than the first two years at a four year school too. Also in my state community college offers 4 year degrees through a 4 year institution. There is an off campus site at each community college in the state plus some in Washington State, Navada, the Bahammas, and other places.

No these schools are not MIT or Harvard, but they offer a decent education and most of the people I talked to liked being there. You can park at a 5 minutes walk from class and the schools are not old and run down etc. The school I go to always has better computers and equipment (in general) than the 4 years schools in my area.

Neither. I am just wondering why these people even bother advertising it. It seems like alot of people around here put those stickers in their cars.

Proud Parent of a Smugville High School Honour Student

Come on people......get a life.......

Do you really think anyone driving behind you cares if your kid is an honour student?
Are they more likely to drive carefully and not hit your car because your kid is a college grad?

Sheesh!!!!

Maybe they are. Does it bother you?

sounds like it does. if i'm proud of something i'll damn well put as many stickers as i want on my car.

Edit: Maybe they should post how much they make in their instead then. That might be a better measure of how much success they are having. I'd rather know that than what school they went to in case I get into an accident with them.

while I agree that yes, the parents are proud as they should be, I totally disagree that "there is no difference between a good community college and Harvard or MIT", that is complete bull. Yes you can use the same books, but no way in hell will cover the same material or do the same work. And definitely no way that "your education won't make any difference", you're telling me a big tech. corp. would pass up a MIT graduate over a community college grad? (personality and stuff aside) The school you go to matters a lot ... that's bascially your chance of landing the interview.

it's true for the most part only if you work at it though. the only difference is that the networking options are probably better at ivy league schools.

but really, it's where you end up, not the route you took to get there. we have a surgery resident here who went to a med school in the caribbean. it's pretty tough getting into a competitive residency if you're a foreign medical graduate and the caribbean schools are generally considered the "community college" of med schools.
