are pets allowed in dorms?

I am looking to get a pet... but i'll be going to university next year. Are any kinds of pets allowed in dorms? i'm not talking a cat or dog, maybe a lizard or a rat...

Open-coil appliances are a fire hazard. Same principle that says you can't prop stairwell doors open, or leave a heap of cardboard boxes on the floor.

For the pets, it's common sense - if your pet tarantula escapes from its cage while you're away from the weekend, it breeds (well, not necessarily), then you end up with some sort of a sanitation or infestation problem. If your fish escapes from the bowl, he dies.

If your bowl somehow gets knocked off your desk, the fish will die, the floor'll get wet. If your pet spider or frog escapes... right.

Depends on the school.
At my school, the rule was that your pet had to be able to live 24x7 in a 10 gallon or smaller aquarium and wasn't a nuisance in terms of noise or odor.

This rule is amusing because it did not specifically exclude dogs, cats or other livestock, and theoretically if you could get a yorkshire terrier to not bark at all, as long as it was always in its 10-gallon tank, it was legal.

Here at Pitt it's fish only. Since fish always die for me, I've got a pet fern. It's a hardy little sucker, I'll give it that. I can forget to water it for weeks on end and it stays alive.
