Are SCSI harddrives more reliable than IDE ?

Since the beginning SCSI has had a higher reliability rate, but IDE drives have come a long way in the last couple years.. I'm not sure how far apart they are any more, but in the past SCSI drives have been higher quality..

They are faster, and tend to be more reliable. In the 15,000rpm, 10,000, and 12,000 RPM field they hold the speed crown, so there is nothing to compare them against. For 7200rpm drives, the difference in reliability is not really noticable, as IDE drives are very stable these days.

They've always been more reliable, my friends swear to them and hate using anything else. I on the other hand like to have money in my pocket after buying or putting a computer together so I've used IDE for a long time.

SCSI is faster and more reliable but IDE is still an excellent direction to take, I guess it all depends on whether you don't mind spending the extra cash.

you wouldn't get a 5 year manufacturers warranty on an ide drive at present, would you?

Over the past 3-5 years, I've purchased 4 SCSI disks (approx $500 each at the time of purchase), and have had to make 4 warranty-replacement returns on them after their abrupt failures.

In other works, every SCSI disk I've purchased has catastrophically failed and required replacement, within the warranty period. That's a 2 GB Conner, two 4GB Western Digitals and an 18GB IBM SCSI disk. I still have the replacement WD and IBM disks in my system, which have all been working OK since their replacement.

So I'd say SCSI hasn't proven itself to be very reliable, to me.
