I know their really fast, but are they still wicked loud? Anybody know of a good comparison of decibels with a normal IDE HD vs a SCSI one?

Btw, has is there a performance difference if a HD is ATA66/100/133. I heard it doesn't relaly matter. That is the transfer rate right?

They are generally loder due to the fact that they generally spin faster, but I have 5 10,000 rpm ones, and its only a little "whine". The 66/100/133 does matter in transfer rate, but for the most part you won;t notice a difference between the 100 and 133. However, the 133 ones are usually newer and faster by nature.

I think about $150 per my google search. I don;t know how loud that model is though. You do realize you will need an adapter for that 80 pin hot swap connector ? Thats about $15 more

Check out a review: http://storagereview.com/articles/200210/20021003MAP3147_1.html

It's not going to be even close to as quiet as a 7200rpm IDE drive and it would appear that some of the more expensive and faster 15krpm drives are even quieter than this one. From a performance standpoint it looks like the Maxtor Atlas 10k IV drives would be a better choice and are about the same noise level. You can get these in 68-pin form for about $140 I believe, this was from a pricewatch search. If you can get a really good deal on this drive it might be worth bidding on, otherwise I would hold off and keep an eye out for something better.

I have two Fujitsu MAS 15K RPM drives in my gaming rig. Idle-wise, they are QUIETER than the WD SE 120GB drive in the same box. Really.

Now, when seeking, they are a bit noiser, but not much. The MAS drives are fluid-bearing drives, which makes them very quiet.

The newer 15K rpm drives aren't cheap; a bit more expensive than say the 10K rpm ones, but they are a lot quieter.

I see some at $130. on pricewatch. They were among the top two or three 10k drives when they came out at the end of 2002. As another said, that is an SCA drive and will need an adapter.

Here are some SCSI vendors where you can get stuff you will need:
hypermicro.com (may offer free ground shipping if you mention www.storagereview.com - check the SR site for the latest offer)
centrix-intl.com
pc-pitstop.com (offers PayPal as a payment option)
scsi4me.com (ditto)
and I can usually find stuff for low bucks on eBay - I got some SCA adapters there and they are working fine on my U-160 drives/U-80 adapter - don't know if they would do it at U-320 but cost less than $10. each from yoozinha (sp.?). Are you going to use the LSI U160 host adapter from newegg for around $40.? Works great with up to two U-320 drives - you might only need a U-320HA if you're planning to run more than 2 HDs.

My case fans are louder than the drives I have. I have 2 - 36 15k's & 2 - 36g 10k's in a Silverstone tj04 case. the Fan make more noise than the drives.

Jose
