*Within walking distance to the desert
*A new england port town
*Driving distance to New York
*Driving distance to Tenn

EVERYwhere is walking distance if you have the time (except from an Island so Hawaii is out and we already know they vacationed there).
EVERYWHERE is driving distance to New York or Tenn (again, except from Hawaii) >>
OK, let me make that more clear... I mean within a day's walking distance or a day's drive. When Homer wacks out on chili, AND when Marge does her Thelma and Louise thing, they end up in the desert right outside of town. A desert that Wiggum patrols, no less.
People, the answer is obvious: Springfield is "anytown" USA. It is not in any one state. This makes the show MUCH more fun because they are not forced to conform the town to any one standard. They can morph it into anything or anywhere they need it to be.
