:Are the writers at Maximum PC on drugs or something?

Anyone read the latest issue about upgrading? Two points stuck out:

1) Their "ultimate" sound upgrade was the SB Live. Excuse me? They gush spectacularly over its software bundle but fail to mention that it hasn't been updated in two years (or more?). Ever hear of the Acoustic Edge, to name one?

2) Their statement that RAID 0 IDE drives "spank" a Seagate X15 Cheetah -- LMAO!! They mention that the RAID setup has a whopping 10MB/sec advantage for data transfer, but just happen to neglect to mention that the seek times of the Seagate will pee profusely over the IDE drives in all other applications.

Their claims just seem to become more distorted every issue. So, did anyone replace their Durons with Celerons yet because Maximum BS thinks they are better?

Anyway, I never read print computer magazines anyway. They are ALWAYS at least a month behind in news/hardware and they just plain flat out SUCK donkey nads.

agreed. a lot of people spend more time on the coverdisk than the magazine.
but if you have the internet and are not afraid to use it then the whole magazine is history

hehe here is an anektdote how dumb review writers can be ...

A guy works for a belgian review mag ... does a review of GF2 MX (the old ones .. a bunch .. like the hercules one, creative one (ddr@64bit)

and especially that creative one gave him troubles .. he wrote (translated as youguys would have some problems reading dutch )

appearently he didnt knew that it was forced to couple 64bit bus with DDR mem nullifying the effect of DDR, it is only a minor mistake .. the dumbness came later ...

when a reader informed him that the thing only has a 64bit bus he answered

s.b live is still the best selling sound card,
why change it when it sell good
they prob have something new ready, just waiting for other to catch up with sb live level

Best selling does not mean it's a better product.I know my TB Santa Cruz whoops my old SB Live in quality.

Yep, Creative's marketing team is pretty good... But the problem is others have actually caught up, and are ahead of the Live.

You proved my point perfectly -- there are at least THREE viable alternatives with better quality than the Live.

Because it's not perfect??? The worst thing a company can do in my book is to sit on their laurels and milk a product after it has past its prime. In software terms, I'm thinking of VALVE!!!!!

Creative has awesome marketing.

I understand there IS a new engine due out later this year. Did you notice that all the SBlive variations (MP3/Platinum, etc.) are now going for cheap as they get rid of their old stock and into the general public's computers.

Grab all the marketshare THEN introduce something new and really better.

Just like Intel. P4 on the .18 micron process for the (rich) losers (sorry, j/k but making a point) THEN upgrade to a new and radically better CPU forcing them to upgrade. Or Microsoft with WinME (a decidedly inferior O/S) forcing the upgrade to XP (not necessary yet for 98SE users).
