is x3 even good? i wanted to pick it up but i've read some horrible reviews about it's buggy-ness and lackluster story.

X3: Reunion seemingly has a lot of bugs which have been ironed out by patches. Some performance issues also.

The X series is the closest you are going to get. Freelancer is only better in its combat. Even X2 takes it apart at every other level.

X3 is the closest thing to elite, and it's still way off, sadly. Freelancer was more polished and easier to pick up, and yes better combat. Combine the two and you'd have a killer game.

X3 the threat ... Warning : its got STAR FORCE protection so don't illegally odtain it or its your computer that will suffer.. research more on star force the most kick ass copy protection on market me thing : )

The game is awesome can be bought for arround $30

Its X2: The Threat or X3: Reunion.

Not X3: The Threat.

I'm finding X3: Reunion to be pretty interesting, but it's not a finished game by any stretch (missing ship models and explosions, etc.) and focuses more on trading and economy than anything else. The graphics are a spectacle; the sheer size of the ships and level of detail are amazing. The campaign storyline flat out sucks, is way too short and way too disjointed. But most people play this game for the empire building aspects anyway.

Freespace 2 is still the best space sim ever for pure combat, though dated graphically by now. Independence War 2 was also great for combat and probably had the best storyline of any space sim.

Other than that, space sims of any kind are thin on the ground right now.

I wish they'd come out with another Freelancer with improved Economic model. That was an excellent game.

Good combat but it was too samey. Your ship always seemed to be the same power compared to the opposing fighters... the difficultly never really changed until you got stuck in the Anubis with the max weapons for that time.

I think they'd need to improve their mission structure and make it more non-linear. At least they could do is stop trying to force you back to the storyline.

SinglePlayer forced the storyline, but Multiplayer didn't. For Multiplayer all you needed was to start a server, then Join.

Space Rangers 2 is supposed to be similar to freelancer.
