are there any free dvd players?

I was wondering if there are any free dvd software players out there?

The CSS decoder license is $5/player so that makes it hard to give away free DVD player software.

I don't know of any free ones.

FYI you can get OEM versions of PowerDVD / WinDVD for $3-10 from newegg & mwave (and others) when you purchase hardware (DVD drive, video card). Also, many DVD drives (even OEM) and some video cards ship with software.

well I have a copy of power dvd at the office but don't feel like getting it tonight.

I'm playing around with ripping dvd's w/o success

No the $5 is what the software vendor pays the DVD Alliance (or DVD Forum, I can never remember which one is the license holder).

You can buy PowerDVD for less than $10 from newegg.com.

Technically it is not possible to legally watch DVD's in the US using linux. The only way to legally decode CSS encoded video is with a licensed player, and none exist for linux. Using deCSS or DVDdecrypter or SmartRipper or any of those tools violate the DMCA. Is this a great country or what?
