Are there any GOOD epic sci-fi films??

I love Sci-fi films and I love good epic films.

But I can't think of a good epic sci-fi film. Can anyone name one that I may be missing?

When I say Epic I think 3+ hour long film and films that large in their scope, ideas and story.

Examples:
The Ten Commandments, Braveheart, Patton, Dr Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia, Ghandi etc

As for Sci-fi I can't think of any that are really long enough and large enough in scope to qualify as epic.

Star Wars would be close, but it too short.
2001 would also be very close, but again just a little short IMO.
Blade Runner. Great movie, right scope, but a little short to be an Epic.

2001 was Epic back in the day but the only reason why it was Epic back then was because of the Special Effects it had. No way is it Epic to anyone born within the past 40 years.

I'm guessing that the special effects costs and development would not make a sci-fi movie of that length cost effective. Their costs are already so high that the studios probably let the director know that they won't fund it if it's that long. "Epic" movies typically do not have very good box office revenue.

For one, most people don't want sit through a three hour movie. Two, theatres aren't particularly fond of them because you can only sell half as many tickets. Double whammy of money pit.

Not so much on length, but for content (especially for the time), the original "The Day The Earth Stood Still"

The Martian Chronicles were very good too.

As mentioned, 2001 fits as well as anything.

I see those as action films more than sci-fi.

T2 is one of my fav films. Two of the best chase scenes ever filmed. I wish Cameron would get back to making films like this.

I enjoyed "Contact" and "The Abyss"

Found out that the fluid scenes in The Abyss where the mouse breathes the fluid were really done on the set , was not a vfx. That fluid has never been tried on people though.

Epic sci-fi is reserved for TV shows. It's hard to make epic sci-fi movies.

of course, shirtless james mcavoy for an entire movie goes a long way in my book
