Mturk, internet assesor, etc.

You can expect to GROSS between 300-1200 a month if you crank full time. Good luck.

seriously no..... The only kind of work from home that ever pays decent is self employment but you'll find its less work to do a 9-5

I know quite a few people who have worked from home full time. Mostly software devs.

You're 100% correct. but i think the OP is asking if the craigslist posts for "work at home" jobs are scams.

And the answer is you'll lose all your money.

You have to have skills (or is that skillz)?

I work from in software development but I don't think that's what the OP is talking about. Billing (particularly medical) is sometimes done out of the office but it requires experience. Stuffing envelopes or secret shopper is almost always a scam.

there are plenty...

I have a buddy that works for ATT on their mobile applications (bs and ms in EE) and he works from home, his whole team tele-works....

Also I almost took a job with a pretty big commercial firm.... 4 days at home and 1 day in DC (50 mile commute) for me... I turned it down.... sorta regret it... but whatever

I work from home full time, and have for seven years, in software development and architecture. If you have skills there are legitimate work at home opportunities. If you have no skills then any opportunity offered is likely to be a scam.

A lot of the normal worthwhile work from home jobs usually start out in an office where you train and get to know your co-workers, then you start telecommuting. These jobs tend to require some experience or education (software devs, remote network or web admins, etc...)

I think OP means those jobs actually labeled as "Work From Home, $1000/week!" where you are assembling crafts or stuffing letters and mailing them or some at home marketing "research" scouring the web or something along those lines.

I always see those kind of jobs posted on telephone poles around colleges, I've never known anyone who had one though.

Yes, there are.
1. Start your own business, run office from your basement.
2. Get hired by a corporation that's generous enough to allow telecommuting.

there are a few people at my IT company who telecommute full-time.

they're basically people who are skilled enough in important positions such that it's easier to put up with the annoyances of telecommuting employees than trying to find replacements.

Yeah...it's so legit that they won't even give you a corporate email address.

My mom has been self-employed for as long as I can remember. My dad has been too, but it's more off and on for him and he has taken several full-time jobs as well as on-site contract jobs throughout his career.

Personally it seems like more work than just working a regular job. They make pretty good money, or at least they have, but their income varies a lot. They have to pay double the Social Security tax (since normally your employer covers half), they have to pay for all their health insurance out of pocket which is very high when you're in your late 50s, and there can be long dry spells.

Basically the way the laws are written highly discourages people from trying to strike out on their own. "Land of Opportunity" my ass, you get fucked if you are self-employed.

Part of my job allows me to teach over the phone, so there are days I never leave the house. I know that there are many others that teach students in different countries via Skype as well.
